“Tipping is seen as an insult in Japan!” Alright. We need to have a talk about this, because it’s related to three things: 1) Actual cultural nuance/history with tipping here in Japan 2) Why we are seeing more and more tip jars/boxes in customer service facing areas in Japan

We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.

I don't know which of my kouhais need to hear this, but because I'm seeing this in a ton of commercial J>E game locs: you really shouldn't retain quotation marks in the same places as the Japanese source text 9 times of 10, especially outside dialogue. Punctuation parity in general is often sloppy.

Thank you for always supporting The Flower Princess of Sylph. The English translation of Volume 2 will begin distribution in March. The 6th episode will be released on the 5th, so I'd be happy if you check it out. シルフの花姫2巻の英訳配信が3月から始まりますよよ。よしなによしなにんじん。

Right now we’re witnessing the difference between authority and power. Elon Musk does not have the legal authority to do any of the things he is doing. He is not authorized to shut down USAID. He is not authorized to take over OPM. He has no legal authority to access all our data and payments.

Reminder to freelance Japanese translators in the US that if you have a working relationship with at least one Japan-based agency, you can qualify for a work visa that: 1. is free for that company to sponsor, 2. allows you to work for other companies, 3. can be issued in up to five-year increments.

Publishers will cry boo-hoo about tight budgets from thin margins, which I don't dispute per se, but when you consider that manga used to pay $20+ per page to translate in the 90s when foreign industry revenue was tiny, forgive me if I wonder if it's more a question of priorities than lack of money.

Shogakukan's is releasing Novelous, its new smartphone app for light novels and manga that uses AI translation, later today

There are a couple different parts to this. First, let's start with type design. All-caps text has a higher visual density because all of the letters are the same height. The available whitespace of a given line of text is most highly filled in for all-caps text compared to mixed-case text.

@zackdavisson.com Excuse me if this is an incredibly ignorant question, but why is it that so much manga lettering is all in uppercase? The case against lowercase lettering in natively English comics is often that it takes up more space to read legibly... 1/2
