Really have been encouraging anyone who works with game history and preservation in some capacity (or even just has an interest in it) to consider attending! This was a great conference and I'm looking forward to the next one in a couple years. Maybe I'll even have something to present!

Realizing my son's primary game struggle nowadays is moving and doing other stuff, I had him try a turn-based two-player game, Artillery Duel. By the time we stopped he had whomped me 1-5 and was giggling maniacally every time he fired a shell at me. Fair, given how many of them hit.

Having recently purchased a tripod I've started a playlist on YouTube of video recordings of arcade machines, primarily those that are rare, quite old, and/or unemulated. Feel free to pull from these as you see fit! They're all creative commons. www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...

I was going through notes and found an email from KOEI-TECMO that sheds some light on the 1981 arcade game "PLEIADS". The idea for the game came from TECMO founder Akihito Kakihara but the programming was outsourced. They claim it has no connection to "Phoenix" but it could have the same programmer.

it's actually sad as hell to use AI for research when research is the fun part. you can just email people and call them on the phone and ask them questions about the thing that they have expertise in. you can read documents & learn cool shit. ok now i'm just talking about how being a reporter is fun

I took a good half-page of notes playing Invisible Monsters for some 20 minutes. It's clear why it got reworked further for Wizard of Wor - the game really encourages you to play very defensively, and that's not ideal for an arcade setting (though it is cool for free play)

In the research room, I did some examination of the troubled Microprose RPG Darklands as well as a unique version of System Shock. @atariarchive.org also got to play the prototype Wiard of Wor, Invisible Monsters. Thanks to @borman.bsky.social et al!

Dr. Lauren Liebe talking about students learning how to play PLATO games. The early graphics are so abstract by today's standards that they couldn't even tell what they were looking at
