I was at the vigil organized by community members from gun violence prevention groups tonight at #Seattle Center. Some folks came and heckled @mayor.seattle.gov. Friends. I know you’re angry and scared. But if I may, let me offer you some better people to yell at. Yell at me. And I can say why 🧵

Our carceral system is not about rehabilitation or even “justice”. It’s about punishment. And we should put more effort into changing it. “Let him go,” Wilson told me. “The man has done 30 years. Shit. What else do they want? If I can forgive him, why can’t everybody else? I’m the one he shot.”

I think instead of complaining about critics, councilmembers would do well to consider what's at the heart of the criticism—in this case, the concern that kids truly will continue to go hungry at school, as they do today, simply because they're over the income cutoff or their parents don't apply.

Absolutely heart wrenching. Too many times have people driven past me (while I’ve been biking) without giving me enough room, when they could have easily veered into the oncoming lane bc there was no traffic. This can be so unnerving! But people riding bikes shouldn’t have to have nerves of steel.
