An artist I really respect told me this was his philosophy once. He said, "I'm a gambling man and I always bet on myself" Since then I've tried to keep that phrase in my mind as a North Star to help me course correct when my instinct is to do the opposite.

As someone who fell in love with this movie at first sight back in 2008 and most recently watched it two weeks ago: this is an absolutely FANTASTIC commentary and ode to what an extraordinary piece of art Speed Racer is—and how and why great art transcends the visual.

I love being edited, being challenged, being asked to think more about why I wrote something. I recognise it's harder and harder to land pitches let alone with editors who have the time to do that work anymore but I also think a lot of substackers could stand to be professionally edited

But there are still a handful of films from that era I adore, most of all SPEED RACER and DEAD MAN’S CHEST. And I’ll always be infinitely grateful for that onslaught of the new.
