Last week me needed a book my library only had in special collections for library use only, no checkout, but cost $4 + $4 shipping to order and read in the comfort of my favorite chair at home.

Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.
It is probably a good thing Trump does not understand shame. If he did he'd be upping the ante in very alarming ways we do not want to see.
I don't think the average American and certainly not the average MAGA even gets the extent to which "humiliate your foe" is a core ethos of the Iranian approach to conflict
The joke about beware of low flying trains om breezy days in New Mexico was not supposed to be literally true.
Strong winds from a storm likely caused this train derailment Saturday, August 1, east of Lordsburg, NM. The derailment involved 39 train cars. There were no injuries to crew members or any threat to the public. Photos courtesy of Hidalgo County Fire Rescue District 1. #NMwx
I um might have done one of those and it was not staying indoors.
The UV rating on my weather app was purple today and said to take all precautions: sunscreen and full-coverage clothing and UV sunglasses and a hat and stay indoors.
New Mexico gardener here who knows "full sun" on a plant label means "for half a day, tops, preferably the morning half and would be fine to plant under a tree."
watching people discover that plants really really like shade is always funny because I have been them
I spend an incredible amount of classroom and office hours time helping students with basic file management. All of us who grew up with floppy disks know digital data has to be physically stored somewhere. People who grew up "on the cloud" need to be taught this!
Relatedly: If you're a college professor, and you assume that all of your students can type quickly, efficiently, and accurately on a keyboard, you're almost certainly wrong.
“If this was true, I would be in jail” is not a real profession of innocence; it is a brag about how strenuously the state protects the male right of private sphere violence against women and children.
Those who believe things like this are working hard at not understanding the finite options available to someone whose abuser has not been prosecuted, found guilty, etc. by the law. And how rarely those things happen to abusers, esp. high-status white male abusers.
I've been trying to tell yall for the last fifteen years that carbon capture is a SCAM in more ways than one.
WATCH: ProPublica & @drilledmedia.bsky.social found that oil and gas companies have been funding climate research at prestigious US universities for 30+ years. This research fostered a misperception that climate change could be solved without dramatically curtailing fossil fuels: propub.li/3TTgAGp
The things I have done to try to keep things cool with men who chose to abuse me is extensive. And includes cooking, invitations to the park (prevents claims you've refused him the kid while allowing you to supervise the kid!), and entirely too much smiling.
Rep. Max Miller: "My former wife has claimed that during a custody exchange at my home that day, I assaulted her…If I had assaulted her, would she have offered to cook me dinner six days later?"
When I was small, my father held a knife to my mom’s throat as I screamed and scratched at his legs. Later she made dinner, because refusing to do so would have been worse. That was a few days before we left in the night, her bleeding, me silent. It was the worst night of my life. And the best.

More please. Would really like HAWKs on the full length of Claremont at every major crossing so it would actually be a usable ped/bike corridor. And more traffic calming for it. Esp by Zuni Elementary & including the little streets around the school.
The city of Albuquerque is continuing to put up new speed cameras, plus new pedestrian signals and solar lights on a bike boulevard.

I've posted before about how if you can't type it looks like magic and makes AI seem much more impressive than it really is.
I wonder if students today would be less likely to lean on AI for writing assignments if schools had made sure they could touch-type (at least 60wpm) before having them submit all their assignments online. 1/🧵
Honestly that would be a huge improvement over the usual stressful music while on hold.

An awful lot of the "compliments" women get accused of not taking are just flattery, at best,* and not at all actually compliments. *frequently they are much worse
There’s also something to how women are socialized to be suspicious of flattery — it’s how we transfer responsibility for men’s desire onto women’s bodies; we are taught to defend against that in service to our “innocence” or whatever — whereas men accept flattery as their due. Perfect marks.
It really really really bugs me how many people simply do not understand what it means when the government tries to convict you even IF THEY FAIL TO DO IT. Do you know how many thousands of dollars in legal fees it costs? You will most likely lose your job. You might lose your home.
People potentially subject to the nyc pied-à-terre tax are being treated with 1% of the administrative hostility of SNAP and Medicaid applicants, and they’re throwing 100x the fit
Another childhood distance lie my Dad told me. It was not 3 miles to ride my bike to the library on the gravel county roads. It was 4. Each way.
So many options. Gonna have to go with 12-step dumpster diving gender nonconforming information superhighway repetitive strain injury

I was back in school TWO DAYS after giving birth because I could not afford to loose financial aid. I missed ONE DAY and was punished for it in class. I had nearly perfect scores on every assignment and exam and otherwise perfect attendance but was still handed the Mom Penalty.
All of this and more. I wouldn't trade my children for the world. But this country has meant that I've traded a lot to be their mom. www.seattletimes.com/opinion/wond...
Gonna be thinking on how one would need to adapt this to get traffic calming and/or protected bike lanes and/or stop lights installed on a street

This is a tip I got from a CTL class early in grad school. And there is often that one group on the last project who thank me for finally getting to work with a group that didn't leave them to do the whole project alone and *just once* getting to experience an equitable work load.
Filmmaking is all group project, all the time, literally forever! Swift accountability about showing up for each other had a ripple effect for everyone’s benefit. [Evil Professor Laugh] If the first group project revealed multiple slackers, I put them all in the same group for Project 2.
I think my grandpa was in elementary school then. So maybe reading and arithmetic? During the Depression he was middle-school aged and they moved from Michigan to Siberia and great grandpa built coke* plants for the Soviets.
Enough “what would you do on the commune questions” If you got sent back 100 years and were given your grandparent’s job, what are you doing?
I once attended an irrigation ditch board meeting where they were plotting how to take water from indigenous people. Stolen land is the foundation of American Farmer Fuckery.
A very serious Rural Politico once told me "Dems have to go to farmer meetings! We gotta be where the people are!" I was in fact in a farmer meeting at that very moment! So I live-texted him the meeting. They were complaining that they want indentured workers that they don't have to pay or feed.
I am endlessly irritated that when fathers kill their children it doesn't get this kind of coverage but is just *shrug* a normal thing.
Lindsay Clancy is charged with three counts of first-degree murder for strangling her children. Her attorney is seeking what's known as the insanity defense, arguing that she was in the throes of postpartum psychosis (via WBUR).
