Suddenly, an image flooded his mind: a woman, old and frail, with hands gnarled like the bush’s roots, tenderly nurturing these very flowers. He felt her profound love for them, her quiet pride, and then, a sudden, chilling vision of her final breath, a gasp of pain, a fleeting moment of terror before the peace. He felt her lingering attachment, not to the house, but solely to these lilies. He snatched his hand back, and the vivid vision dissolved. To his astonishment, the lilies, moments ago on the verge of collapse, had perked up, their heads lifted as if revitalised.
