El-Sayed, Lawrence and McKinney all won progressive campaigns in Michigan last night by talking about climate and clean energy like it was a kitchen-table issue — because skyrocketing energy bills and endless wildfire smoke matter to people.

NEW: Republicans tried to get Missourians to effectively kill direct democracy and ballot initiatives. Last night, Missourians literally laughed in their face — rejecting the measure by a massive 80% to 20%. Here’s what to know:

Missourians Reject Measure That Threatened to Kill Citizen-Led Ballot Initiatives - Bolts

Missourians on Tuesday overwhelmingly voted against a measure to restrict direct democracy, while state officials are trying to block even more citizen-led reforms from the November ballot.

I gave a talk at Miami U. called "Why Can't Machine Vision See the Past? Analog Art History and the Future of the Humanities," & while I can't speak for faculty there, I can say that the response was overwhelmingly in support of my criticisms of the forced insinuation of AI into humanities research.

I think we can agree that AI detectors are out. But universities are ignoring the fact that faculty cannot really out-design assessments to meet the challenges of this moment. We need sustained institutional support to be the best teachers we can be, and we aren't getting it.

AI Detectors Are Out, New Assessments Are In A growing number of universities have prohibited AI detectors, arguing they are ‘unreliable’ indicators of cheating. But where does that leave faculty, who know all too well that cheating is rampant in the age of AI? https://bit.ly/4wGitF7 #EDUSky

Soft Rains Day. "Today is August 4, 2026, in the city of Allendale, California. Today is Mr. Featherstone's birthday. Today is the anniversary of Tilita's marriage. Insurance is payable, as are the water, gas, and light bills." RIP Ray Bradbury, 1920-2012

There Will Come Soft Rains
By: Ray Bradbury

In the living room the voice-clock sang, Tick-tock, seven o'clock, time to get up, time to get up, seven o 'clock! as if it were afraid that nobody would. The morning house lay empty. The clock ticked on, repeating and repeating its sounds into the emptiness. Seven-nine, breakfast time, seven-nine!
In the kitchen the breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its warm interior eight pieces of perfectly browned toast, eight eggs sunny side up, sixteen slices of bacon, two coffees, and two
cool glasses of milk.
"Today is August 4, 2026," said a second voice from the kitchen ceiling, "in the city of Allendale, California." It repeated the date three times for memory's sake.
"Today is Mr. Featherstone's birthday. Today is the anniversary of Tilita's marriage. Insurance is payable, as are the water, gas, and light bills."

MAGA is raging at DHS Sec Markwayne Mullin for discussing immigration reform. But the real reason MAGA is so furious is he admitted immigration can be managed in a way that benefits our country. This is absolutely lethal to white nationalist ideology. New from me: newrepublic.com/article/2138...

MAGA Erupts at Trump DHS Chief—and Accidentally Exposes Big MAGA Scam

Markwayne Mullin just said the unsayable: That immigration can sometimes help the economy and the country. Now MAGA wants his head.

I repeat: this IS NOT AN AGREEMENT WITH TRUMP so it doesn't even matter that it's not binding. This is the DOJ saying it's withdrawing its own order establishing the fund. But the settlement still exists, and Trump's motion on Friday makes it clear he intends to enforce it, meaning the fund remains

no agreement with trump is binding, it's impossible that anyone at this point fails to understand that. All that's happening here is spineless toadies folding as anticipated bsky.app/profile/matt...

I think of my university as one of those insects which get parasitised. The brain has been eaten but it’s still moving to meet the needs of interlopers with their own very separate, rapacious purposes.
