"When the first of August came round, the Professor realized he had pleasantly trifled away nearly two months at a task which should have taken little more than a week." -Willa Cather (from The Professor's House, 1925)

Spent a good chunk of my life studying sociology before having to give the academia career track up. Sociology has so much to teach us and 100% it makes people uncomfortable because if you’re embracing authoritarianism… you don’t want your people educated and asking questions based on fact.

Co-signing here and I wish just *one* of these articles would point out the history of authoritarian regimes attacking sociology specifically because it makes authoritarians uncomfortable.

Hey hey Bluesky 😎 Software Engineer by day, Doom Mapper by night. I also like lifting and live music. May occasionally post about those things too. Here are some things I made (not all released)

Sad to hear of the passing of Robin Wagner-Pacifici. Her book WHAT IS AN EVENT? is one of those that kind of baffled me on my initial read, yet I found that it stuck with me to the point where I probably think about it on a weekly basis. Maybe it’s time I finally read her book on Aldo Moro

The obituaries for our dear friend and colleague Robin have been posted. I still can’t find the words to mark her passing beyond sharing my deep grief and sadness. sociology.sas.upenn.edu/news/2026/07...

age assurance restrictions are now in effect for Texas Bluesky users (please direct your anger towards Texas politicians for passing SB2420 👎) if you're on iOS 26 or Android, you can choose to share just your age range to verify that you're an adult – no other personal data is shared

Update July 8, 2026: We have made an update to comply with Texas's age assurance law and will restrict access to certain content and features for users in Texas under the age of 18.Age Assurance

Hey there!

You are accessing Bluesky from a region that legally requires us to verify your age before allowing you to access the app.

Based on your network, we think you're in Texas, United States. This estimate may be inaccurate if you're using a VPN. Tap here to update your location with GPS.

[Share age range button]

Sharing your age range reveals only the range associated with your Apple Account – for example, that you're at least 18. Your exact age and birthday are never shared, and this data never leaves this device. Therefore, it only enables access on this device. Alternatively, you can use our trusted partner, KWS, to complete your verification and enable access on all platforms.

We've been working to comply with a growing number of age assurance laws around the world. For more information on how we approach this work (and specific information regarding impacted regions) read our constantly-updated blog post. bsky.social/about/blog/0...

from Bill Gates holding a shotgun and wearing a trenchcoat green screening himself in front of Doom E1M2 to try and sell Windows 95 because Doom was just that popular to Microsoft laying off most of iD is unfortunately a too poetic summary of the history of the game industry as a whole

If they ended up decimating id Software's tech team then I have no faith in anything they'll ever do again under the current leadership. Between last week and today's news...I just don't know what to say at this point.
