A humble academic proposal: let's not have stars. Everyone hired as an academic at a university is there to teach younger generations, to make new knowledge, to have that knowledge critically evaluated by others, and to act on collective insights. We do not need to designate some people as stars.

Even if you don't care about anyone's wellbeing, this shit makes us worse academics (more defensive, less likely to admit mistakes, less likely to ask questions, more energy spent on keeping up "I'm so smart" appearances, less collaborative)

I don't think there's ever been much of an intellectual justification for this kind of culture, to me the aggro Q&A is pretty transparently service to inert nerd masculinity and serves no other function

This is pretty god damn bleak. Amnesty has withstood pressure from murderous dictators and genocidal regimes and yet they caved to lawfare from JK Rowling. This effectively means no domestic UK organization can criticize Rowling or GC orgs without risk of being destroyed by endless lawfare.
My main takeaway was that trying to scientifically define biologically distinct competition categories of “women” and “men” is always going to be a nightmare and deeply harmful because human sex is complicated and people cannot (and should not) be forcibly categorized through sex testing.
The way you could make a genuinely interesting documentary under the same title... but no, we have to go the moral panic route instead

This was a project with zero business case that would have destroyed economic value and soft power – and stopped homebuilding! It was a terrible project that deserved to die. When people say no, sometimes they are correct.
Imagine regulating something based entirely on nonsense. Mike Lee's PROTECT Act claims "the vast majority of pornography sites make no effort to verify the age, consent, or identify of individuals appearing in content uploaded to their sites." Absolutely bonkers.
Please believe us when we say it's never about protecting children. It's always about censoring the entire internet.
Mike Stabile@mikestabile.bsky.social · 2w agoThe PROTECT Act requires all internet platforms (like this one) collect model releases and government IDs for everyone in anything nude or sexual. Not just OnlyFans, but Heated Rivalry and Hunting Wives and Mapplethorpe and top surgery photos.
This is such a good point though, like 2% of people on the street actually look like this
Luigi de Guzman@ouij.bsky.social · 2w agoOne thing I notice though: every story I read about bike lanes tends to be illustrated with a photo of a white person in neon cycling gear and a helmet when a lot of the folks it actually helps are day laborers on cheap bikes and working folks on share bikes
About as fast for a whole lot of trips, and so much faster for a whole lot of other trips, especially if you include looking for parking
