Even under the sepia light of the streetlamps, he radiates life. It’s off-putting. Downright annoying, when I think about it too long.

As much as I want to punch him every time he opens his mouth, I can’t shake the pride settling in my bones, watching him do something as simple as running a hand through his hair. You’d never know he was dead an hour ago. I did that, and I'm not even sure how.
Beneath that pride, a primal fear coils inside me. If my patron ever finds out what I’ve done, there’s no telling what he’ll do to the corpse. But I’ve got a pretty good idea what he might do to me. I have to dump this undead body the first chance I get.

When Minna is offered a place weaving the winds—and protecting the ship from monsters—on one of the largest ships in the Fleet, it comes with a catch: her betrothal to the Deckmistress’ son. The body was bloated, thick veins of black running beneath the sun-dark skin, branching out from the missing chunk of flesh in the dead man’s shoulder. The corpse’s salt-stained trousers had caught on a twisted spike of driftwood, leaving the body to rise and settle with each rush of water up the golden sand.

“Fucking seas,” Minna muttered. “Is he washing in or out, do you figure?”
