She blinked, and the figure was gone. Or maybe she was just seeing things again.

“Theo—” she started, but he wasn’t beside her anymore. “Theo?”

The movement returned. It grew into the shape of a person and then into something beyond. Long fingers, crooked spine, head warped. Panic rose in her throat.

Smell. Sound. Taste. Touch. Sight. Think, Augusta. Think. It’s not real.

What can you smell? Popcorn. What can you hear? The laughter of children, Christmas music. What can you taste? The cider in hand. What can you touch? The scarf around my neck. What can you see? The shadow in the shape of a person.

Augusta froze.

It hadn’t gone away. Instead, it only grew larger, more ominous. It rose in the night till it towered over the tents, the moon behind it blocked out by its mass.

A glimpse of tangled blond curls appeared in her periphery, light against the growing darkness. A hanging light exploded with a pop but no one reacted. Unease clawed at her insides.

“THEO!”

Theo turned, mouth agape. His green eyes met hers, and he pushed forward, towards her, his rainbow scarf flapping in the wind behind him.

Long black claws wrapped around his middle and yanked him back into the shadows.
