People think these vehicles are safe, but really we just don’t have enough reworks usage at this point to know how much safer or not they truly are. It’s like the comment about computers in the real world. They are good at things we find hard, but bad at things we find easy.

"’I am deeply invested in ensuring that our streets are safe for all users, pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. And that is why I support bike lanes on Hopkins Street,’ [Mayor Ishii] said. ‘Cyclist infrastructure improves safety for everyone.’”

Despite a sharply divided public, Berkeley has approved protected bike lanes on Hopkins Street. CM Shoshana O'Keefe (who reps the district) called it "absolute madness." "This is about more than just a bike lane," countered CM Mark Humbert.

“[Libby] Lee-Egan…installed a traffic counter at her house that sometimes measures drivers whizzing by at 45 [mph], a dangerous condition for any cyclist or scooter rider pedaling alongside them. ‘If it comes down to safety versus parking, we cannot let parking win,’ [she] said. ‘That’s crazy.”

It’s the latest salvo in a battle that’s spanned two mayoral administrations and endured endless rhetoric about the war on cars. And it could result in 100 lost parking spaces in Berkeley.
