Water minister Emma Hardy said the UK needs to be "prepared for this new normal". Except this won't be a "new normal" because "normal" conditions will keep shifting, with droughts, heatwaves, wildfires, storms, floods and diseases becoming worse through feedbacks as time passes.
Major incident declared after large wildfire breaks out - as UK warned of 'new normal' after drought declared
Firefighters in Suffolk were battling the biggest wildfire of Wednesday, but other crews were kept busy elsewhere in the country too. It broke out just hours after half of England was declared to be i...

Stop the Climate Amendment Bill!
This is important because climate change is the most serious and important issue facing humankind. We have a rapidly closing window of opportunity to prevent catastrophic damage to the natural world ...

Wow, it’s as if the FSU uses the language of free speech selectively to shield favoured speakers and ideas from scrutiny, who could have predicted this www.stuff.co.nz/politics/361...
Free Speech Union attacks reporter for asking minister questions
The Free Speech Union ‒ which exists to defend free speech ‒ has attacked a journalist for asking Health Minister Simeon Brown questions over email.

But as I can see TOP can’t state its bottom lines because it was a political party created by design It is trying to be all things to all voters & it’s not yet clear that it’s ‘recruited’ leader commands the internal party Not knowing bottom lines is problem for TOP voters so media needs to ask!
those voters who want progressive change have a real a problem now Despite National’s attacks on environment & Tiriti & poor/vulnerable Top continues to offer Nats an olive branch Polling suggests TOP is taking votes off Labour, Greens not National So Top votes may still Nat in power anyway

The other option that a friend of mine mentioned is of course is that TOP could provide confidence and supply, not formally be in coalition. Luxon did not rule that out.
Thanks to @henrycooke.bsky.social & @graemeedgeler.bsky.social for highlighting this-no NZ govt should be able to unilaterally change voting. Removing registration rights established since 1948 impacts 230,000+ people & undermines the legitimacy of election results www.thepost.co.nz/politics/361...
Everyone needs to check their enrolment status. It only takes a moment. And for those who are not technology literate, a family member or friend can do that for them. Also, librarians are a wonderful resource, too.
Speaking today at 12 noon at UC about new rules that will stop up to 200,000 people voting & won’t speed up vote counts. National & Act & NZF blocked, actually blocked enrolment by NZers within 13 days before elections The ability of parties to block voters from voting like this must be stopped
Wow listening right now to the most powerful presentation by Amber Lronard Schoss against the homeless bill as a surivor of state harm - under justice - I speak at the end of the evening around 845 but this Amber is so gracious, so powerful -an amazing moment www3.parliament.nz/en/pb/sc/wat...

I've said several things out loud in my comments on NZ missing it's climate targets, telling political parties to "get over themselves" (a technical term) & tackle lobbying to fix NZ climate - scroll down to the bottom after colleagues thoughtful comments www.sciencemediacentre.co.nz/2026/07/22/n...

💥 The oil/gas industry “publicly underplayed the concerns over methane. And as the natural gas industry faced increasing competition from electric stoves and heaters, industry groups worked on an advertising campaign that highlighted gas as a clean fuel.” Gift: www.nytimes.com/2026/07/21/c...

The companies knew they were releasing more of the greenhouse gas than they publicly reported, according to industry files cited by the Center for Climate Integrity, an activist organization.

wow the sneering smugness of BBC radio 4 interviewers and anchors when interviewing anyone in Andy Burnham's team is quite something
"The Chicago boys (& girls) are back" What does it mean for NZ's election 2026? Hope you can join me at UC 21/7 12 noon
Rail roading increasingly chaotic law changes through parliament just before the election in NZ is not an advertisement for a 4 year term- Rather it shows that we need to ensure we have stronger institutional checks and balances on the use of urgency, political donations and lobbying in NZ
No sooner had the Govt decimated environmental protections in the new Planning & Natural Environment Bills, they drop the bombshell that Manawhakahono ā rohe agreements will be scrapped too (literally minutes after select committee had agreed to uphold them...including national and act members) ☠️☠️
I want people to understand the full impact of the devastation that First Nations in Canada are facing. It's NOT just that people and wildlife are losing their homes...it's the history that is being lost for generations to come.
The Times it is ‘a changin’ However could someone tell the NZ Opportunity Party that investing land taxes into universal basic SERVICES, can have much better outcomes for the environment & social development than investing in high consumption new-right-lite individual basic INCOME models? 😬
Be bold, Andy Burnham, and tax land not bricks
A privilege to be at the ‘Future Right Now’ event at the Whitlam centre in Western Sydney to reflect on the big ideas and ways indigenous and intersectional justice movements are shaping the next wave of #climate mobilisation around the world
Professor Patricio Cabello’s clear compelling, chilling description of the revival of politics of the 1980s. THe ‘Chicago boys’ are back: political institutions are weak & the clear objective is to dismantle the state particularly environmental & Indigenous regulations As in 80’s NZ echoes Chile
So proud of my brave dad, risking 14 years in jail, alongside many others, for making a video to highlight Israel’s deliberate attacks on freedom of expression by targeting journalists for assassination and pointing out that saving lives is not terrorism. #PalestineAction youtu.be/xkt507ERESI?...

Oh no Sam Neil! What a lovely human and such a strong voice for the environment & the arts
Just 5 minutes left to make a comment on this rushed & frankly in my view, corrupting bill which erodes trust in the proper processes of NZ law making- and we need a clear set of rules around lobbying -its not a staffer's mistake, its lack of oversight of lobbying www3.parliament.nz/en/pb/sc/mak...

Just did a real basic submission against the Climate Change Response (Tort Liability) Amendment Bill. Image is a screengrab of it. Full copy is in alt text. The info provided by Lawyers for Climate Action, linked by Bronwyn below, was helpful
