Everything A Border

Trying to get a PhD through the horrors. Critical Border Studies. Enviro History. Aspiring spousal hire. EBFG. Three down and to the left.

The real communities of people who lived through 'operation w*tback', prevention through deterrence, Bracero, internment, the war on terror, all do have a frame reference beyond Indiana Jones. Reinforcing the idea that the most important political subject is the 'everyday white' is fucking weird.

The analogy conflicts with the teaching of American history. That is the problem. But also, a lot of adult Americans do have their own frame of reference. At least at a basic level, they know segregation & the KKK existed, they know slavery existed, they know genocide of Indigenous peoples occurred.

Perpetually linking ICE activity to mid 20th century Nazism misses over a hundred years of US immigration law based on racial exclusion AND the very real policies of US empire both domestic and abroad. The US held Haitian asylum seekers in detention camps in Cuba for years as recently as the 90s.

When you pass the buck of American imperialism to the German Nazis, you don't just draw attention to how bad the US has become, you exonerate both the Nazis and the historic imperialists/authoritarians of your own country, since the former were inspired by the latter.

Making a artificial line btwn ppl in a prison who supposedly got "due process" (stares in PIC) and ppl in imm. detention does no one any good-they are all stemming from the same theoretical frameworks of state power and "surplus". call them camps or prisons just realize they are all connected.

Observations on the Failings of Humanity@justinstarren.bsky.social · 6d ago

Jails or prisons imply that the people are in them as a result of due process. That cannot be said of the ICE camps.

At this point I use a home library app on my phone to catalog them all because I was tired of being like "oh this looks awesome" at the store forgetting I already have a copy (or 2). But at home they are def organized by theme, generally regionally, and then by "where the fuck can I put this one??"

Enough of the horrors and doom scrolling. Let's talk about something fun. How do you arrange your books?

With wildfires across Oregon and Washington impacting Native nations in each state, communities have rallied together to support families impacted by the fires through supplies and monetary donations. Below is information on what and where to donate. www.underscore.news/land/wildfir...

There is an unfortunate way that your fave local bookstore might be complicit in this. Around here, small and especially used/rare bookstores have seen an insane increase in online sales from these 3rd party AI sites-and they happily fill them as fast as possible. 💸💸

‘Anthropic described the project as “our effort to disruptively scan all the world’s books” in an internal memo, which noted “we do not want it to be known that we are pursuing this project”.’

Hey everybody, My rez is currently experiencing the worst fire season in recent history. Homes have been lost, families are being evacuated from town and could use some support. The community has set up a fund. If anyone has anything to spare I'd be forever grateful www.zeffy.com/en-US/organi...
