Having seen the best and worst of nonprofits and movement spaces, I think DSA and NYC-DSA should professionalize more and rely less on rotating volunteer labor for institutional memory. The local chapter however should hire a full time ED and move admin work off the co-chairs.

You can’t expect leftists, immigrants, and marginalized folks to vote strategically for Democrats, but turn around and look at the corporate media consolidation, climate change, and the march of fascism and then refuse to work with anti-capitalist because you don’t like the vibe.

As someone who has and continues to work across the political spectrum within the left, I’m hearing some very tired arguments from people who are not happy with the results. For many years leftists and socialists lost and experienced petty attacks.

People need to come to grasp with the fact that the whole rugged (selfish) individualism that pervades US thinking makes its way into left organizations ALL THE TIME. You are not immune. You are also not immune to white supremacy or misogyny either. It’s the air we breathe.

Having organized within @socialists.nyc for over 8 years, I’ve seen a lot of electoral cycles. Regardless of the results tomorrow I hope the org does a good and sincere autopsy of what worked and what didn’t so we don’t repeat past oversights. Volunteer orgs lose too much to turnover.

One of the reasons why I think social media is counter revolutionary is because it rewards binary thinking about important ideas and encourages squashing nuisance. It’s either one or the other. Good or bad. The Marjane Satrapi conversation on Twitter is a good example.

It’s not possible to hate people who you don’t agree with politically, and have a capacity to really get good at organizing mass politics. I don’t know what to call it, but if you can’t see people as people, you can’t be that good at bringing people together collectively.

If we are operating only within the bounds of normal politics, then the most important thing the left can do is fight back against the conservative media apparatus. Otherwise we will all be crushed and there is no way out. Or, it’s mass politics y’all. And this ain’t exactly it.
