When we talk about the importance of funding libraries and library workers - this is the result of being down just *six* people across the entire city of Chicago. Wherever you live, libraries have been running on shoestrings for years and years. Fighting for funding improves service you use!

You can’t solve a housing shortage by saying “no” to housing. We need to build more homes, protect renters, and make sure the 32nd Ward is a place where people can afford to put down roots and families can grow. My thoughts on housing and affordability: www.patrickfor32.com/news-updates...

A Progressive, Pro-Housing Agenda - Patrick Gilsenan for 32nd Ward

Business should have to accept the legal tender of this country. I try to avoid place that are credit only signal that they don't want to serve people who are unbanked or don't have access to credit. I know it's easier in some ways, but it's crummy.

A) cops are not workers. BBBBBBBB) if you have hiring, firing, and disciplinary discretion over other employees - you are not a worker. CCCCCCCCCC) You can't discipline a fellow union member, so this would just allow (even more) rampant police abuse up to almost the highest level. D) Absurd.

In a letter to Chicago's deputy mayor of labor relations, a union attorney asked the city to “voluntarily recognize” a collective bargaining unit of commanders and deputy chiefs, pointing to an executive order Mayor Johnson signed.

The Ritual Sexual Abuse moral panic in the 1980s combined terror for (primarily) lower income preschool workers with a broader project of forcing women back in the home. The girls' sports moral panic pairs terrorizing trans people with a broader project of ending sports for all girls and women.

An initiative on the ballot in Washington state in November would require all athletes seeking to play girl's sports from kindergarten to high school to undergo "genetic screening, a testosterone-levels test, or an examination of their reproductive anatomy" before they can play

The Campaign to Force Genital Exams on Girl Athletes Soon Washington State could require sex-verification tests for those playing sports in schools.

Honestly one of the most baffling design decisions I've ever seen. It was torn up for like 6 months, and then they poured a bunch of curbs and put in asphalt. CPD also removed the long area along the tennis court where folks could throw long balls. Now it is back to being a blank unused area.

Chicago Mayoral candidates’ position on shotspotter is a good litmus test for who is going to let AI “move fast and break things” at the expense of communities and taxpayers.

Just a reminder that in this country, the process is punishment. 24 hours in jail to process your arrest, money for bail, money for a lawyer, missed work for your court appearances...it all adds up. We do this to poor people every single day in this country. Many never really recover.

The Justice Department is admitting that a $14 million renovation on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, DC, was flawed, and is dropping the criminal case against a former Olympian that accused him of damaging the pool, according to a new court filing. https://cnn.it/3RJJnwj

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

They extended the run of Hadestown through next Wednesday. Some of the times are very weird - there's a 7:55a show that will leave you just a bit late for work on Monday - but it's an absolutely spectacular filming of a spectacular show.
