A lot of people don't understand how hard it can be to detect money laundering from just a few low value transactions. The statistics of rare events can be difficult. Example in this thread. 🧵 1/3

Having people on here who talk about stuff other than politics is *desperately* needed, and that has nothing to do with a political bubble in the way that this was -- I think intentionally disingeunously -- framed to piss people on here off

Republican Senator Bernie Moreno has serious concerns over the behavior of his ex-son-in-law Max Miller. These concerns seem to be pretty recent and not very deep. I think that most people would take a bit more vehement position in defense of their daughter. www.politico.com/news/2026/08...

Rep. Max Miller denounced by Sen. Bernie Moreno, his former father-in-law

“I believe Max Miller needs to seek professional help to end the clear pattern of abuse he has left in his wake,” the senator said.

3/3 of the states with the highest per capita deaths from COVID were extreme red country 2/2 of the states with the lowest per capita deaths were very, very blue. But, yeah, sure, Republican states did better. Except for the fact that they didn't. Facts are so irksome to stable geniuses.

TIL that the former CEO of eBay who told his team to "take down" husband and wife journalists and ultimately cost eBay, himself and others a criminal conviction and >$50 million in civil damages is STILL on the board for General Motors. Apparently they don't have a problem with his behavior.

Has anyone been able to come up with some kind of "individual climate loss/adaptation" calculator. I imagine something like the (cursed!) carbon footprint calculator but instead of calculating carbon usage, it calculates your personal climate change-related costs?

You got that right! I was so lucky as to meet him with a small group of people, in 2008, early in his first election. Listening to him speak, meeting him afterward 1 on 1, completely convinced me. And all these years later, having seen so much more, I feel exactly the same. A treasure

This is a really cool story, but not just because butterfly memories persist through metamorphosis. The other cool thing is that a kid reached out and a scientist responded with help and advice. That's the best way to foster new scientists. 🧪 www.upworthy.com/ten-year-old...
