I haven't seen the Odyssey but can I just say I'm glad there's finally a major Hollywood picture about how the only correct political tendency is the immortal science of Marxism-Leninism.

Also - having a trans man play a pivotal role as Sinon really does feel quietly boundary breaking. (You can tell trans men are men because his character had more interiority in this then his pre transition role in Inception, despite getting less than a quarter % of comparable screentime)

I've been thinking a lot about this snippet of Foucault that Judith Butler cited in 'Gender Trouble'. 'Sex' is often held in these legal opinions to be a 'self-evident' and 'immutable' category, eliding how it is an agglomeration of variable and varied traits given meaning for regulatory reasons.

“ … the notion of 'sex' made it possible to group together, in an artificial unity, anatomical elements, biological functions, conducts, sensations, and pleasures, and it enabled one to make use of this fictitious unity as a causal principle, an omnipresent meaning: sex was thus able to function as a unique signifier and as a universal signified.”

The court held that "sex" in Title IX refers to "biological sex" but then doesn't define it. Is it DNA? Endogenous hormone profile? Gametes? Primary sex characteristics? Those can all be incongruous.

§106.41(b). The term “sex” in the 1972 Title IX statute, the 1974 Javits Amendment, and the 1975 Title IX regulations cannot plausibly be interpreted to refer to anything other than biological sex. The ordinary meaning of the term “sex” at the time of enactment in the early 1970s was biological sex and not gender identity, particularly in the sports context. See, e.g., Frontiero v. Richardson, 411 U. S. 677, 686 (1973) (plurality opinion) (“sex” is “an immutable characteristic”).
