On 21 October, we celebrate #AppleDay. Dorset and Somerset folklore tells of Lazy Lawrence, a green-eyed pixy pony who gallops through orchards guarding apples. His name is said to refer to the inability to walk after drinking too much cider: “Lazy Lawrence has got your legs!” 🍎

A collage of three photographs of apples growing on trees. On the left, clusters of rosy pink and yellow apples hang against an old, weathered brick wall. Top right, three red apples hang among fresh green leaves. Bottom right, pale golden-yellow apples nestle among green foliage.

The canalside hedges are thrumming with insects feeding on the Ivy flower nectar. It’s important not to cut your Ivy if it’s flowering as it’s a great source of late season food for our pollinators. I haven’t seen one of these before - a Hornet Mimic Hoverfly. Also some late Red Admirals around.
