Tea drinker, book lover, writer, mum of twin girls, northern Brit. In Canada for ten years now. Writing YA/Adult.

Makes it sound like she’s leading an unprompted crusade against the film so that we all go ‘what a load of elitist gatekeeping’ when actually she was commissioned by a literary publication to give her opinion as a scholar for people who like to read that sort of thing

‘Nolan has read at least the first line of my translation of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘖𝘥𝘺𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘺 into iambic pentameter. In one interview, he cited my version of it: “Tell me about a complicated man.” But I would be ashamed to have written any part of this script.’ New, by Emily Wilson www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

Collage of 6 images in black and white. Top left is a mountain, right a cracked desert floor. Middle left a knife on a tree stump. Right two children with pigtails walking away from the camera hand in hand. Bottom left a dying tree, right a stone staircase to the sky.

Do not speak to me of "barriers to entry". Every act of creation is slicing out a thin sliver of light from the existential darkness of the human condition. You not being able to pick up a fucking pencil and risk failing does not even register.

Living in Canada there are so many of these trucks and I'm sick of them. I'm reasonably tall and they're up to my chest, a kid stands no chance. Drivers also seem to feel invincible in them as they're the ones most reckless I find. Although I guess blind spots don't help.

"based on the best available data, the model reached a sobering estimate: The shift toward vehicles with higher hoods caused about 3,000 deaths from 2016 to 2024. The estimate is conservative in many ways." www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

The fantasy of human colonization of Mars isn't just stupid, unrealistic, or a waste of resources — it's pernicious, because it actively stokes insouciance with respect to safeguarding the only planet that at least 99.99999999% of us are ever going to live on.

When her son was 7, Mary McGonigle-Martin gave him raw milk, as it promised to treat allergies and digestive problems. A month later, he fell gravely ill. Now 27, he’s still dealing with the effects of kidney damage and other health issues.

He Profits Off Raw Milk That’s Making People Sick. The Government Isn’t Stopping Him.

With Raw Farm, the largest raw-milk dairy in the country, Mark McAfee has capitalized on a once-fringe product that’s been thrust into the mainstream in recent years and backed by Health Secretary Rob...

On the one hand, baffling to place blame for falling author incomes on libraries (and there are ways you can offset this anyway), on the other, given the state of the world and how libraries are an island of good in a sea of trash, totally on brand.

You all-- I never thought I'd see the day, but library peeps, strap in for a fight. The Author's Guild is going after us as the reason why authors are making less money. I don't think they understand who they are dealing with: www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/...

UK folks, let's jump on this AI regulation petition the Society of Authors emailed out! It's an actual parliament one so the government HAS to respond if it reaches the signature threshold. It calls for regulations to make AI developers disclose copyrighted works trained on. Sign & repost!! ❤️

Petition: Protect creators' rights: require AI firms to disclose training data

We ask the Government to introduce a statutory duty requiring AI developers to disclose the copyrighted works used to train generative AI in enough detail for creators to identify use of their work, e...

this is also a crisis in publishing as the midlist collapses and publishers chase fanfic or tiktok breakouts and then throw them to the wolves with little support. no one has the time or budget to grow authors while they learn their craft and become better writers, and that was BEFORE AI bullshit.

and no, none of what is going on right now leads to “better” shows - why? BECAUSE WRITERS/DIRECTORS/CREATIVES DON’T GET ENOUGH OPPORTUNITIES TO GET BETTER AT THEIR CRAFT AND CAN’T EARN ENOUGH TO STAY IN IT FOR LONG ENOUGH TO GAIN MASTERY. (10/14)
