Okay folks, here's the update on the situation. You can read the full story on our blog. But the person behind two of the stories we published in March, Issue 26 of Solarpunk Magazine misrepresented themself and used AI to generate the stories. Thse two stories have been removed from Issue 26.

We Unknowingly Published AI Slop, and We're Taking Accountability

Solarpunk Magazine has removed two stories due to strong evidence of AI use, in addition to other submission policy violaitons. We're taking accountability.

I'm blown away by this Cast of Wonders release of my story. Rebecca Wei Hsieh does a superb job with the narration--it's a big cast and she nailed the voices, especially of a certain cantankerous, wish-granting catfish 🐟 Thanks too to Katherine Inskip for hosting and Jeremy Carter for producing!

As mainstream publishing steers itself away from even the thinnest veneer of diversity towards conservative propaganda disguised as sexy empowerment... the real problem is small magazine editors and micropresses not publishing exclusively glittering prose that arrives fully formed in the slush pile?

not saying anything new, but if these folks actually believed in genAI writing, they'd disclose it, tout it, and build their own audiences elsewhere and leave others be. hiding and sneaking it to markets who want no part of it doesn't prove you're good at writing. just proves you're good at fraud.

I just hope that we can maintain trust. Just as we can find false meaning in AI-generated work when we're reading it as if it were human-written, we can find "AI tells" in human-written work if we're reading with suspicion and looking for them. It's hard to keep that balance, but we have to try.

This situation is a perfect example of how sloppers drain others. They put nothing in and steal so much. I appreciate Bona Books doing their diligence along with community help. And I'm honored they've asked me to join the anthology with a blasphemous Wrath story of my own making 🖤

Follow me and the first thing I see is that you trade in hours of AI video and ambience and it's a block. Not to my door. Generative AI is a planet-killing theft engine hollow of lived experience. The bubble will burst, but that's not why we oppose it, we refuse AI because it's morally bankrupt.
