This is just it. They’re privileged enough to know that if it doesn’t work out they won’t be disadvantaged by the consequences of their right wing political turn, but they will have made themselves desirable to a string of corporates who will offer rather lovely consulting positions.
Their strategy here is “Win over elderly reactionaries or bust”, and it’s helpful to understand that for them, “bust” means “very well-remunerated post-politics job with corporate donor” or at worst, “period in opposition, then try again with exactly the same shit”.
