I enjoy writing software, reading fiction, drinking beer, and making the world a better place for us all to live.
The function* of hippie punching is to reinforce right wing framing. An effective response is to ridicule the act of hippie punching. “The Atlantic hires hippie punching hack to punch hippies. You will never guess what happens next”. *No matter what the motives of the puncher are.
Serious Q: Given that progs on here constantly write long, detailed, searching threads on Atlantic pieces, w/ links and screen caps, why would its editors spend a second reconsidering their editorial conduct? All criticism is seen as proof that the writer is "provocative" and "gets talked about."

When someone comes on hospice service, we provide them a care team including an MD, a nurse practitioner, an RN, home health aide, social worker, chaplain and volunteer — and then we find out their kid has been filling all these roles for years.
Sharing a gift link to this because I know when I was caretaking my mom every ounce of validation that I was doing something emotionally, physically, professionally and financially impossible helped me feel less alone
I expect some difficult conversations happening at work around “AI” soon. I really appreciate this post for giving me a better vocabulary for those conversations.

Who’s organizing the counter demonstrations? Looks like I need to take a couple of days off in September.
BREAKING: President Trump announces Republicans will hold their first-ever midterm convention in Dallas in September.
Free tacos being given away to Democrats (this taco truck is parked outside the Dem State Convention) paid for by donations raised by Greg Abbott (not Paxton, btw) to oppose the Dems. This is criminal fraud, according to Trump’s DOJ. See the logic in their indictment of the SPLC.
apparently in texas, paxton’s campaign is dunking on talarico by …giving out free tacos with talarico’s name on them, courtesy of “radical texas dot com”? whose idea was this, lol.
There are many decent people who vote for Republicans in Texas. The party itself (electeds, staff, and activists) are absolutely terrible people. Just the most cynical, hate-mongering, racist, corrupt organization. Mostly fueled by oil money. Stories like this make me physically ill.
A Muslim Texan hoping to participate in the state Republican convention left in tears after after being told explicitly that he should leave the country. bit.ly/4eo3nfd
Hakeem Olajuwon. Although I will never forget seeing George Gervin scoring 40+ points regularly in the early 80s.
Who is the best athlete relative to their sport you saw play live? I'm gonna say Mia Hamm at the 1996 Olympics.
For all the folks looking for positive masculine role models, here’s a new YouTube channel that has it covered. He just happens to be a great role model for all the genders, however many there are in your world view. www.cbsnews.com/pittsburgh/n...

The iconic, Pittsburgh-based children's show now has a dedicated YouTube channel honoring the legacy of Fred Rogers.

The Mexican contribution to breakfast is undeniable. However, I will always have a soft spot in my heart for south Texas diner breakfast cuisine which is like the “best of” combination of Mexican, ranch, and southern cuisine.
Let’s do some discourse. Who has the best breakfasts? My vote is Mexico: huevos rancheros/divorciados, chilaquiles, molletes, tetelas, papas con chorizo, churros, migas… plus café de olla I dunno, I think they figured it out?
For all the folks just finding out about the Texas Railroad Commission (because an insanely bigoted Republican candidate is in the news), the TRC doesn’t regulate railroads anymore. Its power has always been in oil and gas. It set global oil prices for decades. It was the model for OPEC. Literally.
Trump v US was an overt act in furtherance of the Jan. 6 seditious conspiracy.
I think Democrats should come out and say Blanche's "settlement" and the Slush Fund generally is one act in a continuing January 6 conspiracy, extending statutes of limitation for another 3 years.
Just gonna go ahead and post this again, 'cause it's still fuckin' relevant.
Feeling overwhelmed with all of this. LISTEN. Another Louisiana resident (Marshawn is the only name we have) testifies against the state’s racial gerrymander, speaking truth to power up and down the hearing room and predicts how this story will end. Speak your truth, fight and believe.
My hottest political take: Sure, expanding SCOTUS is essential, expanding the House of Representatives ain’t a bad idea, but what we really need to do is expand the Senate. Break up the big states. It’s easy. Just look up how Kentucky became a state. The constitution doesn’t define what a state is.
And that’s why I am going to keep saying that we need to give Trump the full Akhenaten treatment when he’s gone. Remove his name and likeness from every single thing.
The ballroom, the arch… I have a PhD in Egyptology and I know a mortuary temple complex when I see one.
Happy 93rd birthday to Willie Nelson! Clip from Outlaws and Angels, Live at the Wiltern Theater, 2004.
Jim Comey’s lawyers ought to show up for their first appearance with an entire case of Metamucil to give to the DOJ lawyers. What else do give those who have lost the presumption of regularity?
“I think it might be upsetting that we really do not live in their world of principalities and powers.” Colbert is making an interesting theological point, positioning authoritarians and their lackeys as “the powers”. Reminds me of Walter Wink…
Colbert speaks the truth. News people are jealous. They could do it themselves, you know? Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2026/04/28/b...

Those are good restrictions, but I have this one cold.
One more thing. Trump wants to put a whale molester in charge of consumer safety. That’s right, he’s proposing moving the US Consumer Products Safety Commission into HHS. We surely don’t need RFK, Jr. controlling the best government social media account. www.cpsc.gov/s3fs-public/...

Much like marine mammals, the Marine Mammal Commission is endangered. Trump wants to eliminate it. On the list of Trump atrocities, this one is way down the list, I know. It’s just one more independent agency that must be eliminated by the “unitary executive”. www.mmc.gov/wp-content/u...

Once Trump is out of power, we need to give him the full Akhenaten treatment. Remove his name from everything. Erase his existence from history. The lists of US presidents will just skip his two terms. Most of all, we need to make sure he knows it’s going to happen.
I love that Orbán is going to be beaten by a guy named Peter Hungarian. Like if Trump went down to someone named John American.
With 15% of ballots counted, Tisza (the opposition to Orban) is ahead (keep in mind more urban areas will report more slowly), and has a large lead in projected seats.
