I've been asking over at Substack, but want to throw the question out here too: what makes a "good" book review in this day and age? When do you read book reviews (before or after reading the book)? Do you discover books through reviews?

*whispers* you know we can do this cultural debate about art thing all the time, right? Websites and news organizations used to have culture critics on staff whose entire job was writing about books, movies, and TV. People read them and then discussed them. We have the technology to do this again.

Someone get me in a room with MacKenzie Scott’s folks and I’ll deliver my impassioned / well-constructed argument that it’s a moral imperative that she give $20 million to a new distributor specifically for nonprofit and small presses in order to offset her ex’s dismantling of the book industry.

This is a serious question not meant as a dig, I’m just curious: for people who never learned cursive (which is a lot I guess?), how do you sign your name? Just regular print letters?
