Christopher Nolan’s big problem is that he knows violence is bad, but he still thinks the men who commit it are kind of cool and impressive. Hence his movies either becoming incoherent like Tenet or morally muddled like The Odyssey. Apart from that he’s also just kind of joyless.

I should be walking out of a theater humming your lietmotifs, you cowards, not feeling vaguely unsettled by ambient atonal strings

I have a few: 1) The night sky. Light pollution has fundamentally changed our experience of the stars. 2) Actual quiet - no distant traffic or electrical lines. 3) Music and the spoken word. We’ve been raised in literate and now audiovisual cultures; that’s a recent innovation. 4) Memory.
