How the BBC is reporting Dolly Parton's passing.
having watched 八仙/All Wishes Come True! yesterday, and having not quite vibed with its animation style (so uncanny, so smooth), seeing the two posters together in that first photo is such a potent contrast
Niu Lai (lit. Cow Come) was released without a press kit. Movie theaters in China have begun making their own posters. Surprisingly, not an AI in sight, just ppl living in the mement.
the entire Chinese internet has embraced what's basically a work of outsider art; a terribly animated film about a cow's dream made by a mother-son team and distributed by a former interior decoration company. It's now made millions at the box office.

Got a new google scholar notification, so I go check and find this very cool poem by Wang Jibing 王计兵, the recent Lu Xun prize winner, prefacing a PhD thesis on women migrant workers and the gig economy PhD students in all disciplines: more poems in theses please, we love to see them! ✨💫
Emily Wilson set the entire world to arguing how to properly interpret an ancient poem and a modern blockbuster but sure, this is a failure of public engagement.
If the academy gets pulled into coming out swinging against the biggest adaptation of Homer in probably a couple generations off the back of one prominent scholar deciding to be Reviewer 2 to Nolan's work, it will say, IMO, pretty damning things about academia's ability to foster public engagement.
Open Letter: Stop the Uncritical Adoption of AI Technologies in Academia It's been a year & people tell me they've changed their mind, feel safer now to sign, etc. So I'm sharing it again for them. We're almost at 2k & anybody from anywhere can add their names. openletter.earth/open-letter-...
cause of death: ticking endless "I am human!" verification boxes while doing literature searches to build an academic misconduct evidence trail for genAI-falsified citations

Encountering Otherness in Video Game Cultures @ Sidestone Press
This book brings together a selection of papers delivered at the Video Game Cultures 2024 conference, held from 12 to 14 September 2024 at Birmingham City University, UK. The conference theme was ‘other’ in all its permutations: other, others, othered, othering, otherness, and beyond. The aim was to centre marginal practices, marginal identities, peripheral national traditions, and consider researcher positionality in/as other. Participants were asked to reflect on other spaces and sites of gaming, discuss other approaches and methods to studying games, players, and gaming cultures. Core questions were: What can we learn from (or about) other researcher practices, other…

I spent the last few months talking to over 30 game developers about generative AI. It began as a sort of interview survey but became a pretty comprehensive collection of arguments against the technology altogether. www.gamesradar.com/games/why-so...

Exactly this. Every statement from almost every institution is kneecapped waaay before it begins by the unspoken but unilaterally understood requirement to first accept/protect the interests of the investor class. Without capitulation, you cannot be taken seriously. But the Pope can just go for it.
Skimmed the encylical and was repeatedly struck by how shocking (good) it feels to read a coherent institutional vision / strategy for how to maneuver through These Times rooted in common sense and firm principles. We have been intellectually failed and starved by so many other institutions.
the group chat has been trying this, and we're all getting slightly different "cool, what else do you need?" responses
Oh my fucking god I thought they made this up. They did not. I just tried it myself
so far a 100% hit rate for students, having accepted meetings from me to "have a quick chat about research and writing process for the essay submission" (aka fess up on your AI use), reporting family emergencies that keep them from the Teams call

OpenAI: We’re burning money like the Joker. A miracle needs to happen for us to turn a profit Microsoft: Please please use our AI systems, we’re teetering on the edge here Anthropic: I wonder what’ll kill us first: lawsuits, regulations or model collapse Media and universities: AI is here to stay
the high of delivering a book MS brought back to reality by the publisher reasonably also asking for keywords, the blurb for the back cover, "single phrase to describe the book" 🥲

I met with AI data labelers in Kenya who are organizing their colleagues to fight the brutal working conditions and horrible pay given to the workers at the "bottom of the AI supply chain." They believe the NDAs they've signed are unenforceable so are speaking out: www.404media.co/ai-is-africa...

If you ever want to read a paper for free and can't find it otherwise, email the lead author and politely ask for a copy. You will not be bothering the person. You will in fact make their whole entire day. I have had scientists get so excited I asked they sent me everything they ever published.
When someone says „Scientists do not want you to know“ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They can’t shut up about what they found out and want you to know.
