From a comment on the original Built To Fail video: 'Toronto and Vancouver are expensive because of density!" Incorrect. Toronto and Vancouver are dense because their land is expensive. The social purpose of density to to split expensive land across multiple payers.

I have such a difficult time hearing white privileged home owners complain about the impacts of density in their neighborhoods when I know the realities of the housing crisis & those on the verge of homelessness. This is part of why I spoke at city council today www.waveedmonton.ca/blog/letter-...

The nodes and corridors deception – Jacob Dawang

In their report for the February 9 Urban Planning Committee, Administration claim that they expected a majority of redevelopment to occur in nodes and corridors. Is this moving the goalposts?

It’s been an incredible 8 years as ED of OSBA. Leading an organization and 600 businesses through a global pandemic wasn’t in my cards when I joined in 2017, but thanks to an incredible team, we did it. This has been my most challenging and rewarding roles in my career. oldstrathcona.ca/thank-you/

“Someone with a 1-hr car commute needs to earn 40% more to be as happy as someone with a short walk to work. On the other hand, if someone shifts from a long commute to a walk, their happiness increases as much as if they’d fallen in love.” #CityMakingMath 50 reasons to want more walkable streets.

This International women’s day my message to my fellow women is to not give up. I know the world is dark and working against us but we cannot let those who wish to oppress us win. Let’s stick together and lift each other up! 🚺💪

“If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” A classic quote from Malcolm X, who was assassinated 60 years ago today.

Turns out being supported by the same people who support Trump, copying Trumps lazy insult lines, doing Trump-like things like refusing to get the normal security clearance (assuming he CAN get it), & generally wanting to BE Canada’s Trump isn’t all that popular in Canada. Poilievre is losing ground thanks to the Trump effect

A plurality of Conservative supporters in Canada support Donald Trump. Do they realize that's about to cost them the next federal election?

Don’t just say DEI as if it’s a bad word. Spell it out. Say diversity, which is the lifeblood of American society & culture & innovation. Say equity, which a just society should pursue. Say inclusion, because decent people believe in increasing belonging, not isolating people who are different.

I’ve been in a public facing executive role for the last 7 years & the amount of aggression, harassment & bullying I’ve encountered the last year has been greater than I’ve experienced in the previous 6. I suspect it’s about to get worse. Take care of your peeps & watch out for one another, folks.

If someone chooses to live in a smaller home in the inner city in part to avoid a long commute, they generally don’t pressure society to build them a bigger house with more stuff. So if you choose a bigger stuff-filled house in the suburbs, don’t expect society to build you a fast car commute.

Never forget, a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users. ALL ROAD USERS. And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. For sharrows, it’s actually safer to NOT have them. Via @usa.streetsblog.org @nyc.streetsblog.org

Separated Bike Lanes Means Safer Streets, Study Says — Streetsblog USA
