🚨 Last month set a new record for the hottest average global sea surface temperature in the month of July! Record warmth is found in both the deeper ocean and at the surface. This isn't necessarily a surprise, but it will have consequences for around the world. Data in the graphic from NOAA ERRSTv6

Green line graph time series of average sea surface temperature anomalies for each July from 1900 through 2026. There is large interannual variabaility, but an overall long-term increasing trend. Anomalies are computed relative to a 1981-2010 baseline.

Wednesday El Niño update - Record warmth continues in the key monitoring region called Niño 3.4, which is due to both the long-term warming of the tropics (climate change) and the developing El Niño. Over the last 7 days, there has been a steady warming across the central Pacific. Data: OISSTv2.1 🌊

Line graph time series of daily sea surface temperature anomalies in the Nino3.4 region. Years are shown from 1982 to 2025 in shades of blue to light yellow, and 2026 is shown in red. Climatologically, the largest anomalies are during the boreal winter in terms of magnitude. Data is from OISSTv2.1. as noted yesterday, Trump has now come around to treating an Iranian toll system covering the Strait of Hormuz as a given. Hard to overstate the level of strategic failure. US started the war purely as a war of choice and ends up dramatically empowering Iran and given the Iranian govt big wins.

Reuters: Iran wants fees of 5%-7% of the price of cargo from ships using the strait; Oman wants 3%. "Making fees voluntary, at least nominally, could be a way out of the impasse, although an implied threat of Iranian attacks could mean shippers would be unlikely to risk transit without paying."

Trump said the Strait will be open in 48 hrs or he’ll start bombing again. That would be Thurs., enough time to bomb a little, manipulate the market AGAIN & stop bombing Fri right before the markets close. Ridiculous. I don’t think a human has ever uttered “1 or 2 days” more often than this ghoul.

Iran, Oman, US ‘close’ to Hormuz deal: What do they all want?

An agreement could restore shipping through crucial waterway, paving way for peace talks between Tehran and Washington.

100 years of July sea surface temperature anomalies... you'll see important patterns of regional climate variability as the animation evolves, but ultimately, the story behind the long-term trend toward record warmth is driven by human-caused climate change. Data from @noaa.gov ERSSTv6. 🌊

Corporate spending on elections has already topped $500 million this year. That's one third of the $1.58 billion in total that corporations have spent since Citizens United in 2010. Hawaii and Montana both have plans to neutralize this disastrous SCOTUS ruling. Other states must get on board.
