I think the important, broad problem to keep in mind -- especially if you support cameras for traffic enforcement -- is that law enforcement cannot be trusted with technology.

I love this app but who knew bluesky is full of ACAB folks who think it's totally fine to install cameras and automate speeding tickets. Understand most of these are hundreds of million dollar contracts for years to decades with these cities. It's all about money grab corruption. Not safety

TIL that people on bluesky apparently really love surveillance cameras as long as they are marketed as "traffic cameras" and are incapable of thinking even one step ahead about how law enforcement might use (already uses) such cameras for purposes other than catching speeders

Somehow some people rightfully bemoan the lack of public transportation in this country, but also believe even people in rural areas who absolutely need a car to get to their jobs and get groceries should get huge fines or even lose their license for going 2 miles over the speed limit.
I'm continually surprised how folks, in this day and age, will go "mass surveillance is bad unless it's a speed camera, and then it's ok since it generates revenue/ think of the children/ not a REAL license plate reader".
I think it was a huge mistake to make our society so car-dependent. But man. The Discourse today is a good reminder that when it comes to roadways policy, otherwise progressive anti-car people quickly become some of the most pro-carceral, anti-civil liberties people on the planet.
