It's funny how when [redacted] goes on one of his days-long rants it's always against some random poster making a general statement or a video on TikTok or a webcomic, and never, say, the PhD thesis by an actual economist arguing against his "vibecession" theory. Ah, I'm sure it's a concidence.

May I point out that both El-Sayed and Stevens are Millennials. Generational shift. It's here. It's time. November up here won't just be about progressivism vs. fascism. It will also be about the future vs. the past.

Apparently King Bela I of Hungary died because his throne fell on him or collapsed while he was sitting on it, and that's definitely made it on my list of things I'd like to see if I had a time machine.

Abdul El-Sayed’s win represents a big blow to the politics of bygone days. Because if one campaign can show that *that* much money and *that* much old guard support doesn’t guarantee victory, it cracks open what can be imagined. It widens the aperture of what’s possible.

Will This Be AIPAC’s Biggest Defeat – Ever?

Prem was on hand in Michigan to witness the nail-biter between Abdul El-Sayed and Haley Stevens, which appears to have gone down as an astonishing failure for AIPAC.

I've had to change the sequence of planned episodes for TURNING MODERN because otherwise the list of episodes would have been "horrifically violent revolt", "horrifically violent revolt", and next "horrifically violent revolt."

Abdul El-Sayed has won, NBC News says. And there are other wins for the left in Michigan: —William Lawrence wins his U.S. House primary. —A DSA-backed candidate is leading a Democratic incumbent for state House. —Abbas Alawieh, co-founder of Uncommitted, leads for state Senate.

I'm mostly sure that the cute guy who lives across the hall from me has broken up with his girlfriend (wife?) who lived with him and she's moved out. Maybe if I run into him I can just ask him if he likes snails *and* oysters.

The scene from SPARTACUS where Crassus asks Antoninus if he likes to eat snails and oysters.

Harvey & Joyce's adopted daughter Danielle is trying to raise funds to deal with Pekar's raw archive; basically four storage lockers full of notes, outlines, ideas, etc. Note this is not Pekar's comics per se. Those rights have been tied up in court for years. Long, ugly story. Worth backing.

His Name was Harvey Pekar

I've said it before but the infuriating thing about "Stancilism" or whatever you want to call it is that it keeps putting me in a position to defend the average consumer/voter. I'm supposed to be the elitist one here!

I really liked and appreciated this thread, which speaks to my own suspicion that a problem with not just conservatives and libertarians but some liberals is that they give far too much agency (and even culpability) to consumers.

I think this is fundamentally wrong but in an interesting way I will need to write about sometime. The key is a) consumers do not choose what is produced, or how, they choose between what is produced. This is a crucial difference

b) consumers do not choose how goods are distributed, they only choose between distribution channels. This is also crucially different c) consumers do not choose their incomes or overall income distribution. also crucial.

I think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.

It's crazy how Obama helped to hollow out his own grassroots base of support and ground-game in conspiracy with the corporate wing to give to a reactionary consultancy class that have flubbed so hard that they have no credibility with donors or voters so the DSA and dark horse candidates are eating

This is a story of DSCC consolidating around the worst possible moderate and enabling Abdul to steamroll and it seems like some of these establishment figures chose to do this because of psychosis
