Even at the age of 17, McKayle joined a group of activists/artists that included Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte, and Langston Hughes. They held a rally in support of Paul Robeson who had been blacklisted. Robeson couldn't travel or find work because the U.S. govt had revoked his passport.
