studying and teaching the history of race and capitalism in American material culture @ the Sam Fox School in St. Louis

Spent the afternoon with the papers of the Midwest Committee to Protect the Foreign Born, part of a national network fighting political deportations during the height of the Cold War. These "Know Your Rights" cards--similar to those circulating today--remind us that the fight has been a long one

one thing this demonstrates is the extent to which racial, gender, and sexual discrimination has been an important cause and substance of worker organizing, rather than (as is too often claimed) some kind of HR-driven distraction

This to me is one of the central stories about current US politics. The tech barons who decisively threw their support behind Trump wanted commercial benefits, of course; but even more, they wanted to discipline their own employees. That’s the real content of all the anti-DEI stuff.

Zuckerberg is at the vanguard of a dramatic reversal in attitudes across Silicon Valley, whose traditionally liberal workforces have been shocked by a broad backlash against diversity policies and employee dissent.

All the right wing populist op-ed hacks in Canada have been fronting for Poilievre for 2+ years but Trump’s 51st State threats have put them on the spot: they secretly want Canada to become part of the States but only so they personally can get hired to work there, impossible for em any other way

the OTHER thing about the white house’s anti-diversity push is that like old fashioned segregation it is explicitly an effort to undermine unions! like c’mon! don’t be stupid!
