Silver & Iron: Part Three Pages 38/49

Lake gestures with his own beer somewhere over his shoulder. “We should get a table,” he says, as the bottle he offered passes from his hand to Ashley’s. Ashley, still wide-eyed and stunned, simply replies, “Right.” Lake walks off in the direction that he pointed, leaving Ashley staring after him; he takes a moment before turning to look across the dance floor to his friends at the booth table. They all saw that happen and are staring at him with saucer eyes. Ashley stares back with equally massive saucers. He takes a moment to process, then hits them with a shit-eating shrug and hurries off to follow Lake. Lake has found a smaller round table, built into a secluded alcove, under a focused ceiling light that illuminates the tabletop and not much more. The curved booth could fit four to maybe six people, but Ashley makes it look like a tight squeeze as he slides in opposite Lake, who has sprawled in a manner to accommodate his legs which also happens to look very nonchalant. Ashley, who can’t help but stare: “Um… what- what are you doing here?”

Despite the light fixture between them, the primary lighting of the page still bounces between cyan, magenta, and yellow. Lake has one arm leaning behind him on the booth and the other nursing his beer in a somewhat suggestive panel composition. “Should I not be?” He says, slightly nervous, but in a way that sounds blunt. A narrative box humorously suggests that if he could use a tone indicator here it would be “/gen”. Ashley’s posture is also nervous as he goes to open his bottle of beer. “No, I didn’t mean that at all-! I just didn’t know you liked- um- I guess I meant, what brings you here…? If I may ask?” Lake: “Same reason as you. Right?” He speaks around the lip of his bottle as he takes a sip. “For fun.” Ashley pauses, eyebrows raised, about to take his own sip - then whips away from Lake with an expression of disbelief and takes a swig. Ashley, thinking: Why did that sound like a pick-up line??” Lake, extremely nervous now, glancing away, thinking: “Do not say you followed him in here. It’s just a bar. Vampires hang out in bars all the time. I could be one of them. He doesn’t know I’m not.” Ashley, still thinking: “No, don’t overthink things. Of course he’d pull you aside, you have a million things to-” He pauses, his eyes darkening, tone dropping to be more serious. “... Talk about.” He says aloud: “Um… can I ask… how is the girl?” Lake doesn’t meet his eye for a moment, lips pursed. Ashley grimaces as Lake speaks: “It’s still touch-and-go. Her parents are dead. But she’s being brave about it. And she likes being a vampire-” Ashley’s expression shifts from concern to thought until he interrupts Lake, brow furrowed. “Wait- but then-”

Ashley: “But she’s alive? I mean- she’s okay? There was no relapse?” Lake looks slightly startled at the interjection before realising what he’s asking and quickly says, “No! No, she’s perfect.” Ashley listens to this in shock, his mouth hanging open slightly, before clenching his jaw and slumping forward, head in his hands. Lake is reminded instantly of the night they found Heliotrope, where Ashley had collapsed over her body, sobbing in relief after his experimental treatment had worked to cure her of the infection. Then, too, Lake had been unable to say or do anything, only watch as he cried; and now Lake is seeing it happen again, Ashley’s shoulders trembling, and all Lake can do is stammer. But to his surprise Ashley rockets back upright with a booming laugh, his smile so huge it seems to radiate colour - even if the people at the booth next to them look annoyed - before running his hands through his hair, his relief palpable in his expression and dissolution of tension in his body language. “That is the best news I’ve head all week-! God! This means we really have a working- well, not for sure, but it’s a start… after so long… a start…!” As he rambles on happily Lake watches, eyes wide, with a tiny smile of his own forming. Ashley: “And she’s okay!! She’s okay…! Ha hah…”

Silver & Iron: Part Three Pages 35/49

Ashley waits around the crowded bar for his turn to order. The bar lighting more bright and sterile than the rest of the club’s coloured lights, illuminating Ashley as he approaches. He counts on his fingers, thinking: “But still! I used to make it work! It can’t have been six years, can it…?” Someone leaving with their drinks takes a double look at Ashleys height before walking off. Ashley, still thinking: “Did it count with that guy at Chloe’s party- if you have to ask, no, it doesn’t… Oh my God… No wonder Maddoc thinks I’m wound up…” (Aside: I don’t really wanna think about him right now.) Ashley’s eyes turn down. (Thinking) “I did decide I needed to focus on school, but what if I had it the wrong way ‘round? Maybe, to stay focused, I actually needed that outlet- when someone would shut my brain up so I couldn’t think about anything except how good it felt-” Bartender, unseen, interrupting: “What can I get you?” Ashley, smiling with a jolt: “Uh- Yeah! Can I open a tab, and get two beers, a Cos-” Someone else taps a bottle of “De Ville brewery” beer against the countertop, visually cutting off the panel and catching Ashley’s attention, who trails off into “mo…” before his eyes follow up from the bottle to see the person holding it. In the final panel we only see the back of that person’s head, but they have short black hair, and from the perspective they are even taller than Ashley. Ashley stares at them, credit card still outstretched. The bar is lit in blue, but Ashley is stylised in yellow while the new figure is stylised in red.

The figure is revealed to be Lake, recognised first and foremost by his vivid red eyes looking down at Ashley through his fringe - but he has changed slightly since he arrived at the club. He has taken off the red dress shirt and tied it around his waist, leaving only the borrowed white singlet shirt, and broken the cast on his hair, tousling it around his head closer to its usual style, though the pomade gives it extra volume. A thin gold chain is around his neck with a pendant that appears like an inverted cross. But most strikingly, his current outfit gives a good view of his body for the first time, revealing him to be broad-shouldered and densely muscular, with a moderate layer of body fat padding out his arms and chest. He gazes at Ashley with a neutral expression and wordlessly offers the bottle of beer towards him, his stance open and mostly casual, with the exception of slightly tensed shoulders. All Ashley can do is stare back in response, shocked into silence, thinking “... Huh?”

Silver & Iron: Part Three Pages 33/49

Lake stands in the middle of the dance floor in a crowded queer bar, surrounded by said queers. The lighting smacks him in cyan, yellow, and magenta while the lyrics “STRIP MY BODY DOWN TO PARTS / POP MY PUSSY POP MY HEART” blare around him. In his dinky button-up shirt he is at least a head taller than the people around him, some of whom are giving him odd looks, though most are more interested in each other. Lake just stands blankly for a moment before the bass drops and he thinks, “yeah I’m not dressed for this shit.” Elsewhere in the club the scene transitions to Ashley finding his friends at a booth table - Amelia in a shiny mini-dress with her hair in buns, sitting next to a young East Asian man (Zack) with an arm around her, roughly her height, wearing a short-sleeve shirt over what’s potentially a binder, his black hair shaggy and chin-length. The last table mate is a young Black woman with braids in an up-do, wearing a Y2K inspired jacket, dark lipstick, and a septum piercing. All of them smile at Ashley as he approaches. Each panel alternates between cyan, yellow, and magenta, representing the club’s changing lights. Amelia: “Ashley! Yay!” Ashley: “Sorry sorry, my taxi was late! (To Zack) Hey.” Zack (raising his hand slightly) “Hey.” Ashley: “Hi Maya!” Maya, waving: “Hey, Ash.” Amelia: “Don’t worry, we’re still waiting on a few more.” Ashley: “Oh good!” He slides into the booth next to Maya, grinning. “Can I order us some drinks?” Amelia, exuberantly: “I’ll have another Cosmo!” Maya dumps out the contents of a nice purse onto the table with a smile. Zack: “Woah!” Maya: “Okay, you know the drill - these are free from the clinic, so there’s no excuse. Everybody take a dam, rubber, whatever.” Lake surreptitiously drags one of the condoms towards himself while the other three hit him with the eyes emoji. Amelia, sly: “Ashley Lovell, getting up to no good?” Ashley: (Laughing) “Well…” Maya: “He’s just being prepared!” Zack, off-panel: “Like a boy scout.”

Ashley is rendered in an unflatteringly realistic hard lighting as his face drops. “I am prepared to get something up to somewhere tonight or die trying.” His friends react with a moment of surprise and humour before Amelia collects herself, looking sympathetic. “Aww, Ashie! If I’d known you were looking, I would’ve introduced you to some guys! I assumed you were one of those people who put a pause on dating after getting into med school…” Zack: “Does that mean you haven’t been with anyone in two years??” Amelia and Zack wait for Ashley to respond. Ashley just sits there with his hands clutching his head. A second later Zack yells, “Since pre-med!?” and Ashley slumps down further in defeat while Amelia stares in shock. Zack: “I’ll introduce you to some guys! Damn!” Ashley, peeling his head off the table: “Could you?” Maya: “No offence, but why??” Ashley turns to her with the biggest saddest puppy-dog eyes in the world. Maya continues: “You don’t even need an opener, you’re six-foot-fuck. Go stand on the dance floor and collect guys like a drain collects hair.” Zack, sipping his drink, annoyed: “Is it ‘cause you only go for guys bigger than you? Like some kind of masochist? Gimme some of that height if you won’t use it.” Ashley picks himself up. “Nothing like that! It’s just kind of… complicated for me to date casually. My brothers and I are all pretty heavily involved in our family’s company, so if I’m seen as acting too irresponsible-” He makes air quotes around that word, his expression tired- “It doesn’t look so good to our shareholders.”

Amelia, Zack, and Maya all share glances of concern, before leveling that attention back on Ashley, their faces dropping. In unison: “Are you rich?” Ashley stands up from the bar with a grin and says “Drinks are on me!!” The others all raise their arms with him cheering. Zack casually tosses aside a brick. Ashley moves through the crowd of club-goers; amongst them, a drunk white girl gushes over a drag queen in costume, while another man not quite as tall and muscular as Ashley eyes whim with possible annoyance. Ashley pardons himself as he passes by and his mind begins to wander. “Shareholders is close enough to the truth. If I wanted a guy bigger than me, that would not be a problem. The problem is that they’re all werewolves, and that’s a… fraught political climate. (For me.)” He imagines generic big tall hairy werewolf man A hitting on him, saying “So, you’re a Lovell, huh…?” while big tall hairy werewolf man B emerges from nowhere to point accusingly - “This is abuse of authority!” Ashley, still thinking: “But hooking up with random humans isn’t much easier. I’m so scared of hurting them, which is a real threat, that I can’t relax and enjoy myself.” He imagines a golden retriever happily tearing apart a teddy bear, fluffy guts strewn everywhere with a heart-shaped squeaker. Ashley, thinking: “That’s easier to manage in a long-term relationship, but dating a human? Even trickier. By the time you’ve been with someone long enough to trust them with your secret, it becomes an issue that you didn’t tell them sooner.” The focus shifts to him in the club and he finishes thinking, “And either way… humans project one role onto me while werewolves project the total opposite. It’s never about what I want.” Out loud, he says “Excuse me, pardon me,” while passing people, repeating in his head “beers, Cosmo, rum & Coke… Beers, Cosmo, rum & Coke…”

Silver & Iron: Part Three Pages 30/49

One half of a pair of splash pages. Posed abstractly over a cityscape in sunset colours, Ashley wears his club outfit, portrayed in full colour; an unbuttoned plain yellow short-sleeve shirt, worn open over his hairy chest and torso, with a pair of plain light blue linen shorts, plus orange slip-on shoes and a pink waist bag worn as a cross-body pouch. Caught mid-jog with a nervous expression and phone in his hand, he says, “What do you mean my driver is twenty minutes away?? Should I just drive myself-? But then I can’t drink… And I’m not catching a bus in this! I’ve been out of the game so long I forgot how it all works - I can’t believe I’m gonna be late after I flaked last time! Nooo…” At the same time, Lake gets a notification on his (cracked, gamer wallpaper) phone screen that it’s 6:30 PM - sunset. Lake rushes out the front doors saying “Bye! Thanks for the help!” before Sorrel and Heliotrope can stop him. Sorrel, holding a necktie: “Wait! You didn’t let us see how-” [Slam] Sorrel leans against the wall and Heliotrope leans against the stair railing. She is now wearing the Akatsuki robe over her clothes. Heliotrope: “He’s lucky that the first time they met, I died. It can only go up from here.” Sorrel: “No fooling.” He turns to her with a smile. “Wanna have a dress-up of our own, then?” Heliotrope, enunciating, flopping the too-large sleeves: “I thought you’d never ask!”

His hair is slicked back into a neat and overly shiny side-part; the dress shirt, a plain red, is buttoned all the way up to his neck, tucked into tailored black jeans. He’s wearing the lace-up boots under the pants, and the material is squeaking with every step. Lake, thinking: “I never broke in these boots… Bro I sound like a duck.” He temporarily bat-swarms up onto a rooftop, overlooking a busy and well-lit city street. “Can’t find him at his usual lookout spots… but it’s a Saturday night, maybe he went downtown…?” (Pause) “The fact I know his schedule like that is why I need to cut this shit out-” He hears someone saying “Thanks!” from below and glances down to see Ashley hopping nervously out of a taxi while checking his phone. Lake, thinking: “Oh! Shit! There he is!! He really was here! Fuck!” Lake’s smooth-combed dome peeks over the top of the building’s cornice to watch as Ashley jogs off, flustered. Lake tries to wander off in the opposite direction thinking “well he looks busy I should try again another-” only for another version of himself to metaphorically grab him by the collar and yank him back with a determined expression. “No! Dammit!! I’m just going to keep saying that forever and ever! It’s gotta be now!” He observes Ashley showing his ID to a bouncer standing in front of a building with a neon sign reading “Kitty Kitty Bang Bang” with an accompanying pink neon cat. Lake: “A bar? Huh… Man…” He pauses still crouching on the rooftop and thinks to himself. “Well, wait, I could go in there too, right? I’m allowed. It’s a public place. (Aside) I can drink a little, enough to look normal… In fact, maybe it’s less awkward to pretend like I just happened to be there, and ran into him by coincidence!”
