A lot of the scary robot rhetoric feels like front-loaded plausible deniability for the thousands of tiny cuts we're already bleeding from.
It's a weird sleight of hand. The fixation on extinction directs our attention toward imaginary machine agency, but institutions already use these systems to make life-altering decisions with absolutely no accountability. They are encoding existing cruelty and applying it at scale.

Getting people to be discerning has always been a problem; it's both harder and more important now than ever before.
Social media blurs the boundaries, IMO. A Piker, or a Heather Cox Richardson's increasing number of followers have both access and financial benefits, as did increasing sales for legacy media. The issues begin when readers/viewers/followers conflate more sales and followers for authority.
We forget that legacy media used to chase metrics like advertising sales and price, number of viewers, copies sold, and citations to build and maintain their brands. Because of their influence, some of the owners of the media were in the business of getting people elected. See Hearst. Or Murdoch.
It’s important to remember that Hasan Piker isn’t in the business of getting people elected, or in the business of politics in general, he’s in the Hasan Piker business and that stock goes up whenever he does something that makes people talk about Hasan Piker
