This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

The billions wasted on mass deportation could have been used to fund an efficient, fair system for processing asylum claims, making TPS recipients permanent residents, and legalizing undocumented people. We would have a safer, more prosperous, more just country.

From 16,000 to 185 to Zero: Trump’s Claims of Illegal Voting in Nevada Fizzle. "The state sent a strongly worded rebuke to the federal government: Every single person on the list was a lawful citizen."

From 15,000 to 185 to Zero: Trump’s Claims of Illegal Voting in Nevada Fizzle

It was the Trump administration’s latest stumble in its effort to find proof of widespread noncitizen voting, despite decades of evidence that it is extremely rare.

Sen. Susan Collins helped steer millions in federal defense contracts to Navatek, whose CEO illegally funneled thousands of dollars to her campaign. The FBI sought to launch a probe and was eyeing Collins and other lawmakers. Then Trump gutted the unit in charge. THREAD 🧵

It should be bigger news that Natalie Harp reportedly dug up the image that Trump posted of the Obamas as apes. On the pod, @greene.haus is great on how Harp debases our country—and all of us. "It’s degrading and sordid to be governed this way," he says. Listen: newrepublic.com/article/2146...

As the scandal around Trump’s devoted aide spirals downward, a political operative who previously held a job similar to hers explains the deeper reasons all this is so unsettling.

Bleak tidbit from Regime Change — Bessent attempted a Hitler-style shakedown of Zelenskyy as one of his first acts as Treasury Secretary

“Bessent’s proposal would require Ukraine to pay the United States 50 percent of future revenue from state-owned natural resources, including hydrocarbons and rare earth minerals. The document prescribed very specific commitments from Ukraine, but offered no security commitments from the United States. Even though the minerals deal had been Zelensky’s idea, part of the “Victory Plan for Ukraine” he had recently unveiled, he was shocked by Bessent’s terms.
Zelensky explained that he was leading his country through a particularly violent phase of the three-year-old war, and insisted that he and his staff needed more time to consider the proposal. Bessent saw things very differently. He had traveled nearly five thousand miles to an active war zone to obtain Zelensky’s signature, and now Zelensky was telling him no.
“You need to sign this,” Bessent urged. “The purpose of this is to show that there is no daylight” between the U.S. and Ukraine.
Zelensky, furious, replied that the document was an attack on Ukraine’s sovereignty. This was not the way international agreements worked—this was a shakedown.”

Watching in real-time as the right wing media machine's attempt to hijack the WNBA spotlight to push anti-trans hate morphs into an effort by a bunch of men to bash the WNBA by mocking the player's athleticism (comparing them unfavorably to eighth-grade boys) and gender presentations.

Stephen Miller said just the other day that all asylum claims are "fake." A couple deported from the U.S. to Guatemala were gagged, bound, and shot dead. Their 14-month old found crying next to their mother's body. People like Miller don't care though because this is the point: ethnic cleansing.

Overland couple shot dead in Guatemala after local ICE stop led to deportations

The couple’s 14-month-old daughter was found crying beside her mother’s body in a sugarcane field last week, according to Guatemalan authorities and media.

The so-called ceasefire was, in significant part, an attempt by Trump to 1) avoid a War Powers Act vote and 2) game the markets some more. Republicans in Congress let Trump get these people killed.

BREAKING NEWS | Two U.S. service members were killed Friday in an Iranian attack in Jordan, bringing the total number of confirmed U.S. military deaths in the U.S.-Iran war to 16, U.S. officials said.

stuff like this is why one important avenue for court reform is just nixing the shadow docket altogether and forcing these people to explain themselves to the public when they issue orders. also, making their records property of the united states and subject to publication when they leave the bench.

Amy Coney Barrett just told Congress that it would be inappropriate to explain the reasoning behind the Court’s unreasoned shadow docket orders. As if unreasoned judicial orders are a thing. They are not. The reasoning is the whole point.

The Democratic Party's approval rating is in the toilet, and the main reason is voters see Dem leaders and prominent members acting like things are basically okay instead of fighting like there's an emergency. Slot "my friend Lindsey Graham, so funny, how great to work with him" comments into that.

ICE desperately wants you not to care about this story But we must. The killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national striving for his American Dream, is a moral outrage, and a warning. ICE hopes you won't notice that mass deportation is back My new column www.inquirer.com/opinion/ice-...

ICE killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. They want you to be apathetic. Don’t be. | Will Bunch

Salgado came from Mexico, built the American Dream, sent his sons to college, and was senselessly killed by ICE.
