Fisheries conservation is my gig. It will probably be the least of what I discuss here. All opinions expressed here are my own.

Trump's Freedom 250 celebration in DC is planning to fire off 850,000 fireworks on July 4th. That would best the current world record. It would also be 42X more than the 20,000 fireworks typically used in DC. All of this while starting the show at 11 PM nearly 2 hours later than usual.

Human-caused climate change is increasing the risk of hotter temperatures, including these dangerous heat waves. Watch the entire distribution shift to the right. I'm afraid these headlines about record heat are only going to become more common. 🌡️ Visualization by svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/5613/

you see the difference between Iran and America is that in one country ultimate power lies with a cabal of robed theocrats that pays only lip service to democracy, whereas the other is in the Middle East.

Tierra Walker knew that abortion was illegal in Texas, but she thought that hospitals could make an exception for patients like her, whose health was clearly on the line. At 20 weeks pregnant, she died of preeclampsia. (Published January)

Women With High-Risk Pregnancies Have Limited Options Under Abortion Bans

Our reporting has found that abortion bans generally don’t include exceptions that cover health concerns pregnant women with chronic conditions can face — or if they do, doctors aren’t using them.

The supermajority's decision in NRSC allows wealthy donors to circumvent limits on contributions to individual candidates by donating much larger sums to political parties, which can now spend the money in direct coordination with specific candidates. An open invitation for quid pro quo corruption.

“Gonyea was working as a poll worker Tuesday afternoon at the Central Library on Salina Street when agents called to meet with her … She said she did not want to meet them outside alone. ‘I’ve seen the news, especially in Minnesota,’ she said. ‘And I didn’t want anything to happen to me at all.’”

Two ICE agents tracked down a woman *inside a polling place* yesterday. Why? They demanded that she take down an Instagram post in which she named Jonathan Ross as the man who shot & killed Renee Good (after the Star Tribune identified Ross). www.syracuse.com/news/2026/06...

Thanks to @bsky.app, I met @solomonrdavid.bsky.social, visited his lab, read some journal articles, went out and did some fieldwork with him on a boat, and now have written this article. Takeaway: Ancient fish are cool. Science is cool. Public institutions should do cool ancient fish science. (gift)

Look at this figure showing the global distribution of ocean temperature profile observations and contributions from major countries from 2005 to 2023. Without the US, we're flying blind.

Seven world maps (a–g) displaying global ocean temperature profile observations from 2005–2023, colour-coded by platform type: profiling floats (PFL, grey), animal-borne platforms (APB, light blue), expendable bathythermographs (XBT, red lines), CTD casts (orange), drifting buoys (yellow), ocean station data (pink), gliders (dark blue), and moored buoys (black).

**Panel a (all countries)** shows the densest coverage overall, with XBT transect lines crossing all major basins and profiling floats (grey) extensively blanketing the Southern Ocean, South Atlantic, and open Pacific.

**Panel b (USA, 1st)** dominates with bold trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic XBT lines and extensive float coverage across the Pacific — most closely resembling the all-country map.

**Panel c (Australia, 2nd)** shows XBT lines radiating into the Indian Ocean and Southern Ocean, with float data concentrated south of 40°S.

**Panel d (Japan, 3rd)** features an exceptionally dense CTD cluster in the North Pacific and trans-Pacific XBT routes, with minimal Atlantic presence.

**Panel e (France, 4th)** shows dispersed coverage across the tropical Atlantic, Indian Ocean, and Pacific, reflecting overseas territories and research voyages.

**Panel f (Germany, 5th)** displays a small number of prominent long XBT transects across the South Atlantic and Indian Ocean, suggesting systematic repeat-section cruises rather than broad coverage.

**Panel g (all others combined)** shows substantial XBT and CTD activity across all basins but noticeably less profiling float coverage (grey) than panel a, indicating that the top five countries — particularly the USA — drive the majority of float-based observations globally.

To see how important US science is, consider measurements of changes in ocean heat content. US data are ~53% of the total. Over half! But removing the US data is worse than randomly removing 80% of the total data, because unlike other countries, the US makes measurements everywhere. 🧪🌊

BREAKING: President Trump has issued an unlawful executive order attempting to severely restrict mail-in voting. The Constitution is clear: Only the states or Congress can change election laws.

Trump: "We have a thing called a war, or as they would rather say, a military operation. It's for legal reasons. Because as a military operation, I don't need any approvals. As a war you're supposed to get approval from Congress. Something like that. So I call it a military operation."
