“I had known the adventures of poetry, which are always matters of life and death, but when I came back to the streets of Mexico, I was content with everyday life. Why ask for more? Why go on fooling myself?” - Roberto Bolaño, ‘Amulet’

People block words and phrases related to things they don't want to see on Bluesky. Sometimes these are genuinely triggering things; sometimes it's just preference. Include a pic with no alt text, and you're forcing them to see blocked content.

Admire the amazing photo and then read the biography, which is even more amazing.

Fossil hunter, folklorist, evangelist, stonemason, editor, social justice campaigner, & geologist, Hugh Miller (1802–1856) – born #OTD, 10 Oct – should be remembered in the company of Carlyle, Ruskin, Matthew Arnold & JS Mill as one of the leading moral & social thinkers of the #C19th A 🎂🧵

Faded 19th-century sepia photograph of Hugh Miller. He is standing, dressed in workman's overalls, his shirt-sleeves rolled up. He has bushy hair and large sideburns, and his left elbow is propped up on a carved gravestone. His right hand rests on a large stonemason's maul, and he holds a chisel in his left hand.

Very useful to be able to use the data from this superb website to be able to play with it. If you look at the seasonal forecasts that appear to be broadly aligned with the ongoing El Nino, a number of them roughly follow the behaviour of the previous "big ones" of 82/97/15...

The October runs for dynamical El Niño models are now all out, and its a mixed bag. Some revise the event downward, some upward, but on average its still expected to peak at ~4C, albeit with the peak more likely to occur in December than November:

Dans l'infolettre de Moteur de recherche cette semaine j'ai relayé cette étude qui démontre qu'il n'existe aucun aéroport dont les plans d'expansion sont compatibles avec le respect des cibles climatiques. «Overall, planned expansions would add 225 million tonnes of CO₂ to today's emissions.»

I think part of the explanation here is that while heat pump economics don't always beat natural gas furnaces in heating-only retrofits, heat pumps win (without tax credits) vs. propane, heating oil, electric resistance, or when replacing both a furnace and an air conditioner (e.g. in new builds).

Heat pumps have so far withstood the death of federal tax credits

Demand for the climate-friendly HVAC tech has persisted even after Republicans killed incentives, with 2026 set to be another good year for the sector.
