Catastrophe / climate risk @ OAK Global. Visiting Research Fellow & PhD @ University of Reading. FRMetS. Increasingly big fan of data viz. Otherwise eating noodle soup or watching cricket

However - if we change the anomaly base for these charts to be "the last 10 years of data" we can see that whilst 2026 was anomalously warm, at least for the summer period (e.g. the bottom 2 charts", 2018 and 1976 were more stand-out relative to its recent climate.

England and Wales precipitation and Central England Maximum Temperature as an anomaly since the start of Jan, Apr, May and Jun. Elevatory story: 2026 anomalously warm and dry; exceptionally so on the warmth front but with precedent on the dryness front: 1976 was drier on all 4 anomaly bases.

Reform haemorrhaging seats in Electoral Calculus' latest data. I've taken the liberty of saving their data for the last couple of years. Nigel Farage really is blowing up people's trust: they're finally realising he's very much one of the establishment he so claims to want to put to the sword.

Looking at some crude components of tropical cyclogenesis in the Western Main Development Region at the moment and it's really not at the races in terms of areal extent favourable for tropical cyclogenesis compared to the last 30 years... [data up to about 5 days ago from ERA5]

There's been quite a few "well this is odd for the time of year" in recent years for obvious reasons, but stand down everyone, stop showing off with your slightly-out-of-season records, we have a winner. I can't see this being topped: or will it?

I've never seen anything like it. Salta, Argentina, has just recorded its hottest night on record during the climatologically coldest time of the year. The minimum overnight temperature did not fall below 26°C (78.8°F), pulverizing the previous monthly record by 7°C.

The seasonal forecast models continue to point towards an end of the year El Niño peak that would be the strongest ever recorded. Even the least extreme models are predicting a top-5 "Super" El Niño event.

Chart comparing the top 10 historical El Niño events alongside forecasts for later this year.

How dare you make our half-times longer than 15 minutes. They're specifically designed to prevent football fans from drinking no more than 2 pints. Would be a catastrophe in the UK.

“England’s green and pleasant land” becoming “England’s brown and scorched land” — effects of a long-lived heatwave and little rainfall on vegetation in England evident in these images from NOAA-20 today (left) and 18 July 2024 (right) during closer to average conditions.

Just looking at some of the C3S ENSO (RONI) output, contrasting June and July outputs and goodness I'll have whatever the DWD's having: from all-but-one members below 3.0 to all-but-one members above 3.0 !

England need to embrace the fact that absolutely no-one outside of England will be happy if they win the World Cup, so at least aim to do it in most irritating/unfair way possible. So essentially continue their current style of scraping wins despite being 2nd best for large swathes of games.

England vs Norway in the World Cup. Remember how hideously hot and humid it got in the UK during the notable hot spell in June? That ain't a patch on Miami right now. Wishing both sets of players well in this dangerous heat.
