The feature that I'm most excited to see is the "on this day" which gives 24-hour access to issues published on today's date. I think it said we get 150 free articles? Search every morning, using a place name for a #OnePlaceStudy, and voila, pretty soon I'll be up to my ears in articles.

Ten years ago today Britain voted by a narrow majority (51.9%) to leave the EU Most Brits living in other EU countries couldn’t vote. Commonwealth citizens in UK could The Leave campaign featured a pack of lies and promises that did not materialise Today, a growing majority want to rejoin the EU

Our country needs a bold change of direction. Starmer lost the confidence of the country because of his abject failure to challenge the power and wealth of an establishment which has taken for themselves while leaving the vast majority in a cost of living crisis. (1/5)

Keir Starmer resigns as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom: "I will resign as Leader of the Labour Party. I have spoken to his Majesty the King this morning to inform him of my decision." Britain is about to have its seventh PM in a decade.

Bills up. Wages too low. Record profits for Oil & Gas. 50 richest families with more wealth than 50% of population. Shit in our rivers. Pensioners jailed for protesting. Migrants thrown under the bus. Supporting a Genocide. That's Starmer's legacy.

The EU is making it easier than ever to ditch the car keys and hop on your bike. The upcoming World Bicycle Day on Wednesday is the perfect occasion to do so. With our European Declaration on Cycling, we are committed to boosting this experience for you:

A light blue bicycle with various annotations highlighting the benefits of cycling. The annotations include: ’Low running cost, easy repairs’ near the handlebar, ‘Quiet rides, happy pedestrians’ along the front wheel, ‘Boosts endurance, maintains your health’ near the pedal area, ‘Pure human power, limitless potential’ along the rear wheel, and ‘Zero emissions, 100% clean air’. There is a green cityscape contour in the background and a European Union logo in the bottom right corner.

World Migratory Bird Day is a great reminder of being mindful of ground-nesting birds: keep dogs on lead, respect signage & report fires. Already this season, multiple fires wiped out habitat in protected environments, like national parks, with devastating consequences. #WMBD2026 #citizenscience

A barrister is being tried for simply accurately stating the law to a jury in a closing speech, possibly for the first time ever. It is chilling how quickly we are resorting to authoritarian measures, particularly in the context of the genocide in Palestine. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

When Einstein developed general relativity the closest thing to a practical application that could even be imagined at the time was a slightly more precise description of where to look for the planet Mercury in the sky, and yet now we’d all be literally lost without it. Anyway: fund basic research.

GPS satellites move at 1/100000 the speed of light, causing their clocks to tick slower by 7 microseconds per day, and orbit at a height that makes their clocks tick faster by 45 microseconds per day. Two relativistic effects, both at the 1 part in 10 billion level, both essential for GPS accuracy 🧪

the special relativity (SR) effect depends on the velocity of the satellite relative to the speed of light, while the general relativity (GR) effect depends on the height of the satellite relative to Earth. Since both effects are small, we can keep only first-order terms:

two equations, one (top, special relativity) which involves the ratio of v^2/c^2 and one (bottom, general relativity) that involves the ratio of r_E to R_GPS

Almost everything we argue about is a substitute for the thing we should be arguing about: the immense wealth & power of an oligarchic class, which captures governments, ruins lives and wrecks the living planet. This class redirects our rage at scapegoats. To resist its lies is to resist its power.
