Today ABC voted to displace a building of renters for hotel, many of whom are low income seniors who will not find replacement housing in their n’hood. A community who looks out for each other, gone. Like so many before them. This is not the Council decision causing the most angst on my timeline.
Its fine for to advocate for more purpose built rental, I spent most of my career building it. But until renters are given the same rights to their homes as those in the ownership class, and profiteering is curbed, displacement will continue and homelessness will grow.
Its time we accept that our governments don’t view housing as a human right. They do respect property rights, as we saw when ABC councillors expressed empathy for home owners facing negative impacts from the Villages Plan. But in the same week, renters at Myron Manor were given zero consideration.

I have, with my own eyes, watched my tax dollars in the form of missiles as they hit buildings inhabited by civilians. I'd much prefer subsidizing a grocery story I don't use.
