Huge. Huge testament to the power of organising. Huge relief for Exeter friends and colleagues. Huge waste of time and resources. Huge reputational damage done. Huge warning to universities who want to treat their staff like they don’t matter.

The University of Exeter has confirmed that it won’t proceed with compulsory redundancies “at this time”. This means colleagues do not need to complete the pro forma, and there will be no selection process.

Today was the "disposal of the lab books and theses day" as I will have to vacate my office soon 😨. This is my first lab book (and first page) from my Post-Doc at St. Louis Children's Hospital/Washington University. My 2 years there set up my career and I have many happy memories from that time.

The University’s new Strategy to Recovery is not legitimate. It will be imposed on staff and students with no engagement. Promises from Nigel Seaton and other senior managers on engagement have been broken. They have been told that staff and students do not feel engaged. They continue regardless.

This nails the top complex to solve, too “woke” to bother, and too imperceptible a collapse to react de facto response from politicians. There’s a lot you could do by spending nothing - number controls, ban consultants, severely truncate REF etc. But Westminster can’t even imagine that.

Even in University towns and cities the general public don't have much of an interest in the Universiteis that underpin their economies. Look at the empty student flats and quiet restaurants in Sheffield due to the contraction of student numbers and loss of sepending.

When I meet people in the real world, they have 0% - and I mean zero - knowledge of the disaster unfolding in British HE. Even if their kids are actually at uni. They look at me as if I've gone mad. This is why. 👇

Lots of my former colleage are now rethinking their future plans. I spoke with one today who will see out thier new grant and then be off to (non-academic) pastures new follwing a bit of silent quitting. ☹️

Back on strike with @sheffielducu.bsky.social. Why? Management is pushing ahead with restructures despite sitting on £200m+ in reserves. Along with colleagues in East Asian Studies, I also find out in 12 days how many of us they want to fire. No justification is deemed necessary by management.
