This is a story about the President and several of his hand-picked appointees all committing crimes and blatantly lying to the public while stealing public funds and abusing the criminal justice system, but the NYTimes describes the situation like they're recapping a soap opera.

Táíwò@olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social · 7d agoI mostly just find this odd as a rhetorical strategy because it seems fairly obvious to me that, however bad I am persuaded that "hypocritically ignore genocides B and C" is as a politics, "consistently ignore genocides A B and C" is straightforwardly more dogshit
There are only three possible futures: a) everyone in the Trump admin goes to jail, rule of law partially restored; b) Dems retaliate in full, and maybe that's a deterrent; c) neither (a) nor (b), so lawless authoritarianism wins again, and when Republicans regain power they ramp it up even more.

spent 13 years professionally reporting on right wing media, especially fox. and ive written about them for 26 years overall. the idea that you define your party around avoiding issues "that fox news will attack you over" is stupid. theres literally nothing fox wont twist into an attack. nothing.
We had moderates. They gave us decades of disastrous foreign policy, eviscerated social safety nets, soaring inequality, privatization, managed decline, and a party so terrified of confrontation that it treated rising fascism as a messaging problem instead of an existential threat.

there are some obvious, prosaic explanations that don't require examining any sort of 'dark' motivations. The US spends fuckloads of money supporting Israel. Despite massive outcry, that support continued. US politicians big upped Israel and talked all the time about their support.
