I’m happy Burnham is tackling various problems & attracting back Reform voters but it’s all very short term if he doesn’t address the elephant in the room: public squalor amid vast private wealth. We need a huge programme of redistribution & wealth caps as well as floors.

Written before current heat wave! I should emphasise that, although the Earth would be at -18 degrees C without greenhouse effect of water vapour, and carbon dioxide has dug the planet out of 3 Snowball Earth phases, our greenhouse emmissions are nevertheless making the planet uninhabitable for us.

Human activity has pushed the greenhouse effect to dangerous levels - but don't forget, we wouldn't be here without it, writes @marcuschown.bsky.social

Half of the country is in "exceptionally serious drought" - putting us at more risk of wildfires and threatening our food security. Meanwhile water companies are wasting a staggering 2.87 billion litres of water every day through leaky pipes. Time to end water privatisation.

Half of England officially in "exceptionally serious" drought

The number one future of work and opportunity policy goal should be to develop care work as an occupation with status. Number one. The PM's focus on the sector could make a huge difference to UK political economy and national culture.

I see the free-speech champions of Reform UK and their fellow travellers are having a bit of a meltdown today because of a silly t-shirt. I thought this lot were supposed to be thick-skinned and up for a bit of bants?

A weather model suggests temperatures of almost 50 degrees are possible in France. Anyone who claims there is no climate change, who disparages science in this field, or who denies that human activity is the cause, is making a statement that has nothing to do with reality #ClimateEmergency #FarRight

Bill Oddie, what a lovely bloke. He wrote us a letter when we started making The Young Ones, wishing us the very best, and warning us against interference from higher up. He didn’t know anyone in the cast personally. It just came out of the blue. Lovely thing to do.

England, and particularly residents in boroughs like Bromley (see also Kensington, Havering etc.), needs to take a long hard look at itself. Objecting to losing 16 parking spaces from currently 101 for a kids home, when nearby stations & other car parks are within minutes walk, is utterly insane...

I feel like the way of dealing with such behaviour is to look these people right in the eye and say, very gently, "You think your right to park matters more than homes these children?" Then when they reply just repeat it with slightly different emphasis.

When the story of why humanity didn't stop climate change is written, it will feature front pages like this. Even as the skies blacken with climate change-induced wildfires, right wing media continue their relentless crusade against measures to tackle it.

The Times: Net zero risks blackouts. Below a photo of French wildfires.

We can now see the smoke from the Canadian wildfires in the UK. Meanwhile, the rightwing press are pushing for more drilling in the North Sea, and Badenoch is banning Tory candidates who support net zero. Cool cool bsky.app/profile/meto...

Have you noticed an opaqueness to the blue sky this morning? Wildfire smoke from North America is drifting south across the UK, meaning the clear skies may not be as blue as you might expect 🌤️

So much for a fresh start with Burnham. New oil and gas won't cut bills or make Britain more energy secure. But they will lock us into more climate damage. It's time to invest in clean energy, warm homes and the jobs of the future - not to double down on the fuels of the past.

Despite never being a member I've always given the Labour Party the benefit of the doubt. But if new PM Andy Burnham allows more oil & gas to be extracted from the North Sea he's lost any admiration I would've had for him. Britain has burnt more than its fair share of fossil fuels. Stop now.

Why is Kemi Badenoch never asked about the hefty funding the Conservative party has taken from the oil industry and its lobby groups whenever she talks about her decision to scrap her commitment to Net Zero?
