libraries have an absolutely unique aura. There’s nothing like the feeling of stepping into any library from a small public to a massive research library, there’s a palpable difference that feels like walking through an invisible bead curtain

It’s the 88th anniversary today of this immensely enjoyable headline 🧵
Salford pioneered play streets, traffic-free from 8am till sunset (borrowed from New York) in the 1930s. Legislation followed: there were 700 in England and Wales in the 1950s, all but forgotten by the 1980s.
Me at 9am after drinking 3 cups of coffee: i am a task warrior. There is nothing in this world that can defeat me, no amount of laundry or dishes shall conquer me, for I am the hammer of god Me at 5pm, turning off my work PC: i am a golem built out of failure. I am ashes in the mouth of the world

‘James Joyce stands out among the great modernist writers for his belief in tolerance, equality, democracy, progress and the preciousness of the everyday. If he is outrageously experimental, he is also in thrall to the mundane and disregarded.’ Terry Eagleton: www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

I don't think people are ready for this kind of joke yet.
Sometimes in a library I imagine each book as years of an author’s life such that you are standing amidst uncounted hours of effort and concentration like some oasis of meaningful time.

Many happy returns to the incomparable #KateBush born this day in 1958. She danced into our lives with her 1978 number one hit "#WutheringHeights" - based on the classic 1847 tragic #gothic novel by #EmilyBrontë, who was born this day in 1818!

No way would Nolan have a woman to talk that much.
Everyone wondering what Nolan should do next and “yes I said yes I will yes” is right there
Oh I love those Pat Barker books. She is a fine novelist. It’s The Iliad from a female perspective, both moving and illuminating. Read them.. ..
While we are in this Greek Mythology moment, may I remind you that Emma Thompson is adapting Pat Barker’s take on The Iliad, and she’s struggled to get it made bc the focus on what acts of war against women and survival thereafter actually look like (the core of Barker’s narrative) is too intense.

I hope every day you all are trying to cultivate joy. A kindness to a neighbor. A long walk. Poetry. Birdwatching. Meditation. Being silly and playing peekaboo in a checkout line with a cute baby. These are dark times, and joy is something the bastards cannot take from us. Fight for it.
