Given rising interest in the rapidly strengthening El Niño event in the tropical Pacific Ocean, I've created a one-page fact sheet succinctly describing what El Niño is, this year's (remarkable) forecast, and potential impacts from California to global scales. [Thread]

"What is El Niño?
El Niño is the warm phase of a natural cycle, known as El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), that occurs roughly every 2-7 years in the tropical Pacific Ocean. During El Niño events, the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean warms to well above typical levels. El Niño directly affects local climate in the countries closest to the unusually warm ocean waters, but can also indirectly influence the climate of distant regions thousands of miles away. During the strongest events, El Niño can profoundly affect climate even on global scales, causing temporary planetary warming and disrupting large-scale precipitation patterns..."

The 294,912 cores are way too small to see; there are eight large reddish-brown squares, each holding a region of cores. 18 reddish and greenish stripes are slightly visible, showing regions for the 18 bits of storage.

I saw this curious National Geographic plane at the airport and searched online. Apparently they have private jet tours with ~$100,000 price tag. 😲

#PPOD: This image is quite extraordinary, and it's not the big disk that's attracting the most attention. Although the large planet-forming disk around the star PDS 70 is clearly imaged and quite interesting in its own right. 🧪 🔭

An orange circumstellar disk around a star. The disk is bright with a dusty inner ring. At the three o'clock position is a bright spot just inside the dust -- a Jupiter-sized exoplanet. There is a faint haze around the planet where a moon could be forming.

While moving, I found a jar of soy sauce probably there from when I moved in 15 years ago at the back of a kitchen cupboard. Tipped it out and in the jar were little rocks - salt crystals. They're beautiful - and they taste amazing.

RIP Bobby Prince. His music legacy will live on, making inspired music for Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM, countless others. A true legend. And such a nice man, great musician, wonderful, fun-loving man, nothing but happy memories of him. A loss to the world.

Oxford, the longest running continuous weather station in UK history, with temperature observations stretching back to 1815, has preliminarily broken its maximum temperature record for May yesterday by OVER 3ºC with a temperature of 33.7ºC. Unprecedented in its 211-year history.
