But also, given any wide range of possible meanings that rises from his usual narcissistic blather, I don’t think it’s reasonable to assume that the intended meaning of one of history’s most malevolent people is likely to be, in any given instance, a benign one.

I’ve been wrong before, and might be wrong now, but I sort of feel like it isn’t necessary or helpful to parse trump’s most deranged utterances and give the the most charitable possible interpretation. There isn’t a clear meaning, there’s almost never a clear meeting, and that’s often on purpose.
