7 Jan 2026. Just another lovely visit to Kāwhia with friends. This small community (around 400 people) is always a treasure to be in especially when one wants to escape the hustle and bustle of The Big Smoke during the holiday season. Along part of the harbourfront near the tiny town centre is a reserve and community area with lots of places to sit and take in the views. It quickly became a focal point of our post-dinner walkies. Not a cloud was in the sky which was impossibly blue, especially so against the bright orange-red blooms of a Corymbia ficofolia (red flowering gum tree, or scarlet flowered gum). The flowers are joyous bunches of clustered fluff, stretching out from deep brown-red stems. A large unopened seed pod can be seen along with a few buds that are still performing the delicate art of unfurling. The leaves are somewhat glossy, hearty, and deep green. These trees are so attractive, not just to us humans, and welcome all manner of birds and pollinators. Post edit: Only the smallest of crop of the right side of the photo; no Pop nor Saturation – the colours here are stunningly vivid and real.
