It is kind of wild how both the Vimes boots theory and the Bechdel test are both concepts with decades of writing about their validity and application, but are basically just one-off jokes by humor writers. Are there any other load bearing social theories that basically started as jokes?

Since people are still relentlessly abusing me over this, here’s why the so-called “boots theory” doesn’t make any sense. First, what is it? Some people have suggested I haven’t done the background reading, but it’s not a deep idea. It’s from a passage that’s four sentences long.

one of my opinions that feels weirdly out of time and conservative, is that room mates are normal and good. Not only is it financially sound, but its generally good (obvious individual exceptions apply) for ones wellbeing to have other people around.

I think acknowledging Obama as a generational talent, while not doing the same for Trump (in an extremely specifici definition of electioneering) Tom is assuming Trump represents a rising tide of conservatism, rather than a last gasp against it.

it's totally normal for dem primary voters to be concerned with choosing a nominee who can win. i just think when they then put their pundit hat on and try to divine the preferences of the median voters, they're likely to go astray. the best evidence someone can excite others is that they excite you
