The problem is that your phone knows where you are, on the backend, it knows who your friends are, and what they recently bought. If friend hadn’t mentioned the air purifier, you’d see the same ads; you just wouldn’t know.

Someone in my office today mentioned the brand of our office air purifier… and now FB is pushing ads for that brand of air purifier. It’s actually terrifying how our phones quite literally listen to us. (She says, typing from a phone that listens to us 🙃)

Cambridge has rules about limiting expression during public comment, and they’ve always been a little dubious wrt first amendment rights. I’ve never seen us arrest anyone for it, but this kind of scene is always a slippery slope risk once you start restricting speech.

When I see "Waymo saves lives" op-eds, I always do a quick search to see what the author has written extolling protected bike lanes. Or automatic speed cameras. Or road diets. The results are always the same: Nope. Nada. Zilch.

Wu released a letter pledging the city will install more permanent “cast-in-place” concrete barriers along bike lanes, consult with outside advisors, develop truck safety legislation and evaluate the intersection where cycling advocate Louisa Gag was killed.

This letter convinces me that Wu does not plan to change her approach to street safety, continuing to prioritize neighborhood groups complaints and “beauty” over safety. If I worked for the Mayor, after reading this letter, I’d probably plan to quit. It shows her priorities clearly enough.

Starting my trip on Amtrak’s Cardinal service from NYC to Charleston, West Virginia in a typically Amtrak way: we are now reportedly 10 minutes delayed from our 6:40am departure time. (This is the origin stop at one of the first times of the day! How are you already delayed!?)

Today, I have ridden the D, N, Q, and 1 subway lines. Riding transit in NYC is just a totally different experience to almost any other place I’ve done it. (Tokyo can have a similar vibe, but it’s been almost 20 years since I was there, so it’s hard to compare.)

I was going to share pictures I took in NYC, but then Bluesky crashed, and while I was going to try again, I figure this is just fate telling me nobody wants me to upload these pictures. (Unless posting this skeet also crashes the app. In which case I’ll just know I shouldn’t mention New York.)

Is the U.S. any different than Russia at this point? Think about it. Both invade other countries without provocation, both disappear citizens, both kill citizens for daring to oppose the government in any way, both drive their citizens to desperation. Again, think about it.

The NYC supertalls may be the result of terrible policy, they may be terrible places to live, but as someone who looks at the NYC skyline, I think they’re neat.

Massachusetts is the only blue state in the country with a voluntary collaboration agreement with ICE. Ordinary people are showing up to resist this assault on our communities, but our legislature has failed to meet the moment. There are real costs to waiting.

I thought that the Red Line being down wouldn’t affect me this week, since I’m out of town starting today until next Friday. I forgot that the way I was getting out of town was via a train from South Station. Getting from Porter Square to South Station with no Red Line sucks.
