These long flight time balloons are fascinating and open up some real cool autonomous laboratory possibilities where the positioning of these systems could be driven by models and AI based uncertainty quantification.

Been tons of negative stories recently about weather balloons, but let's tell a positive tale today: WindBorne Systems completed an extremely cool mission to fly a balloon into typhoon Dolphin, and NOAA is working with the private sector to get this kind of data into its models. tinyurl.com/yc673875

Smoke forecast for the Midwest. Note that HRRR seems to drastically underforecast PM2.5 given that the overwhelming majority of PM in the region is fire origin.

How bad was it? I pulled 16 years of data from the EPA station in Northbrook, IL. Highest PM2.5 on record. Stations across Chicago show a mix of BOTH highest peak and highest daily average or just highest peak.

A persistent training thunderstorm has been pounding communities south of Montreal for hours this afternoon. Radar estimates show 4-5+ inches (100-125+ mm) of rain across the region over the past six hours.

An example of how quickly driving conditions can deteriorate while storm chasing. As we drove S on IL-45 away from the developing Mattoon-Charleston, IL tornado, the hook of the storm overtook our car. I chuckle, because I know what’s coming.
